A Bat Mitzvah Essay Example

A Bat Mitzvah is a rite of passage that celebrates the coming of age when a young Jewish girl takes on the responsibilities of an adult. A typical Bat Mitzvah is included as a service at the synagogue and follows a similar pattern as a boy’s Bar Mitzvah. Although it is not required, many people choose to spend this memorable day with family and close friends during a celebration or party. It is important to take into consideration the true meaning and significance of a Bat Mitzvah and to not view it only as a social gathering. 

There is plenty of preparation required for Jewish girls to complete during the months before their Bat Mitzvah. These months are used to further learn more about the Mitzvahs along with why they are important to the Jewish faith. The most effective form of preparation is attending a Jewish school, an after-school program, or Sunday Hebrew school. As studying multiple Mitzvahs at once can become very overwhelming, many women choose to focus on one Mitzvah that has some sort of personal significance to their life. The chosen Mitzvah is then researched and studied in-depth as a part of a Mitzvah project. Mitzvahs are defined as good deeds done from religious duty, such as commandments. They incorporate Jewish tradition along with helping others including kosher cooking, volunteering, and doing charity work. By researching a Mitzvah project and applying their knowledge to their daily life, girls are able to develop a deeper connection to Judaism and God. 

A girl automatically becomes a Bat Mitzvah after her twelfth birthday. There are no hard-set rules on how to celebrate this special occasion, yet it is common for big parties to be thrown in the Bat Mitzvah's honour. This is a service that takes place in the synagogue, traditionally witnessed by family and friends of the Bat Mitzvah girl. Even without a service or celebration, the girl will still become a Bat Mitzvah (daughter of the Mitzvahs). The celebration typically follows a similar pattern to a boy’s Bar Mitzvah, although Bar Mitzvah requirements such as reading from the Torah are much less strict during a Bat Mitzvah. The Bat Mitzvah girl is generally expected to prepare a speech thanking her family and friends for attending, reading a thought from the Torah that is meaningful to her, sharing the lessons she has learned from her Mitzvah project, and reciting stories of historical Jewish women. The Bat Mitzvah girl often calls upon guests to light a candle once the first meal has been served. The lighting of these candles signifies the importance of the relationship between the Bat Mitzvah girl and her chosen guests. Customarily traditional gifts will be given to the Bat Mitzvah girl, such as educational or religious books, gift certificates, religious items, or money. 

After the ceremony, these women are officially responsible for living according to Jewish law and obligations. New responsibilities include abiding by the law, participating fully in services at the synagogue, and setting a good example for other Jewish youth. The observations of the Mitzvahs are not finished but have only just begun. It is important for women to continue researching and learning different types of Mitzvahs, as well as continuing to practice Jewish traditions. The Bat Mitzvah indicates the beginning of a fulfilling Jewish lifestyle. 

A similar Canadian rite of passage would be a girl's sweet 16th birthday party. Although it has no religious background, it is a coming-of-age celebration where young girls begin to take on more adult responsibilities. A sweet 16 and a Bat Mitzvah both mark the end of childhood and the transition to adulthood. Similarities between the 2 include parties or celebrations in the girl's honour, receiving gifts, gathering with friends and family, and the opening of doors to new experiences and opportunities.
