Before seeing this movie, I was always fascinated by stories about the supernatural, monsters, or occasionally both. I happened to come across this movie's information while looking for something else. Both the title and the poster looked interesting so, I decided to watch it after seeing an intriguing trailer and a couple of star ratings. Some people gave it one star since a scene was too long, while others gave it five stars as it was "one of the best they had seen." There were a few that ranged from 2 to 4 stars. As a result, I decided to go in with an open mind and watch it. Please keep in mind that the remainder of this review contains a few spoilers. So, if you don't want them, I suggest watching the movie first. Another thing to keep in mind is that this is your only warning.

In the opening credits, I saw a couple (Casey Affleck, Rooney Mara), discussing where to move to, with the movie quoting from a book, which motivated Director David Lowry to make this movie, written by Virginia Woolf. Then, they heard a noise that had involved a piano that came with their current home. Little did the man, C, know what the answer would be.

The story revolves around a man who dies and then haunts his house without saying anything. Despite being boring in modern-day films, I believe the silence would have worked well as a silent film. Simply remove the already minimal speaking parts. However, he does so while wearing a white sheet with eye holes cut out of it. It's great that they used this concept to show that he's a ghost, but why couldn't he also be transparent? Even though there were some ghost elements, such as going through walls, what confused me was when the other characters went around him instead of through him. They're circling in the air, arching their backs for no apparent reason. A sliver of sunlight shone through the swaying trees as the wife ate a pie made by a neighbor. The trees in the shown window are still standing, so this was odd. As a result, her husband was still present as no one was outside, and she was now living alone. As others have mentioned, I discovered not one, but two slightly longer scenes, the first one being when the couple was kissing foreheads and lips in bed (pre-death). That scene alone should have only taken a few seconds, followed by the couple falling asleep. But they didn't stop then and there as they went on for a total of three minutes. Anyway, the second time was when his ghost stood there for what seemed like 15 minutes watching his wife eat the pie before running to the bathroom to vomit. Who wants to spend fifteen minutes watching a woman stuff a pie in her face? And all the while, the film left me perplexed with one unanswered question that has lingered in my mind: what was written on the note?

To summarize, I believe the film was enjoyable at times but dull at others. I would have given it a higher rating if it had a more eerie atmosphere. I believe that a little bit of speech with some actual meaning would, more or less, bring the romance with the paranormal to life on both sides.
