In The Crucible, Abigale is seen as the antagonist. In the play, she lies to her parents, to her best friend, and to the court. In the end, she gets people killed because she lies. But have you ever wondered “What would I have done if I was Abigale?” You would lie to the court and to the people you love; to save your own life. Abigail is not as evil as we believe her to be, because you would do the same.

The Crucible takes place during the 1600s in a little town known as Salem. During this time witchcraft was no joke. Anyone who was accused of witchcraft (with enough evidence) was hanged. To go with this; anyone who lied would be hung as well. For instance, if they (the court in The Crucible) found out Abigale lied about all the people being active in witchcraft she would be hanged. However before they could confirm that she lied she ran away and stole 31 pounds, proving that she lied.

Despite her lying, you would have done the same thing to save your own life. Abigale is found  “worshipping the devil” early in the play. This happens in the woods where the kid drink chicken blood and dance. However the lying doesn’t come in till later in the play. An example of this is "But God made my face; you cannot want to tear my face. Envy is a deadly sin, Mary" (Abigail, Act 3). This scene shows Abigale lying about why Mary had come to the court room and said that they were all faking it. Mary had come to tell the truth

Probably the most important party of the play is she actual confesses to witchcraft. "I want to open myself!... I want the light of God, I want the sweet love of Jesus! I danced for the Devil; I saw him, I wrote in his book; I go back to Jesus; I kiss His hand. I saw Sarah Good with the Devil! I saw Goody Osburn with the Devil! I saw Bridget Bishop with the Devil!" (Abigail Williams, Act One). However she brings down other with her. Her thought is “if I go down, they go down with me or, if I confess with there name to go along with me they will go along with my act.” Now this seems harmless and it is, but it leads to something deeper. It leads to the Crucible it’s self. If you and your friends got in trouble though you would say “Yea I did it, but it was also Adam and Jack.” thats just what you do so you don’t get in trouble alone. Not everyone will do this, sometimes people will take the fall. A majority of the time though people will rat there friends out.
