It’s sad to think about how in 2021, only 37% of countries allow a woman to get an abortion if need be. Abortion is the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy performed during the first twenty-eight weeks of the pregnancy. Women might feel threatened by the possibility of losing their right to choose what to do with their bodies because as of September 25th, 2020, former president of the United States, Donald Trump, appointed Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court. Amy herself has openly admitted to being a conservative. By having traditional republican and ideological Judeo-Christian morals, conservatives share many ideologies and beliefs with republicans. With Amy Coney Barret in the Supreme Court, this makes women feel threatened to potentially have their abortion rights taken away. Although abortions are “killing the baby” and taking it out of the woman, during the first twenty-eight weeks the baby is just a clump of cells and women need to have the right to get an abortion if they choose to do so since it is their body.

Since this is such a difficult and emotional topic, it’s important to consider the opposing side. Many believe that it’s not just a clump of cells and that there is still a child being grown inside of the woman. One writer and editor, for example, wrote an article in the Boston Globe in which she argued that a fetus should be treated as a human. In the article, Chelsea Conaboy broadcasts, “Human life begins with a human genotype, determined at conception, which sets in motion a distinct path of development.” She also quotes Dr. Ingrid Skop, a physician in San Antonia and a board member od the American Association of Pro-Life obstetricians and Gynecologists, who said, “A fetus is the same being that he is going to be as an infant” (qtd. In Conaboy). As well as, “He’s the same being he is going to be as a child or an adult. He’s just at a lower stage of development” (qtd. In Conaboy). Some believe that just because the fetus isn’t a full-grown baby yet, doesn’t mean it won’t be and that its life doesn’t matter. The Pro-Life advocates would say that the developing child doesn’t even get to have a voice or opinion when it comes to abortion.

Still, abortion isn’t something other people should get to decide for a woman. Even though this is a difficult and a very opinionated issue. First, think about the future of the child if the mother cannot get an abortion. Unplanned and unwanted parenthood could lead to negative effects on the child such as physical abuse, mental/emotional abuse, sent off to foster care, abandonment, the list goes on. Forcing a woman to have the child that she is carrying, despite what she wants, could lead to a horrible life for the child and the parents. An abortion is also necessary for medical reasons. If you take away the right to an abortion, think of the medical problems that could likely be on the rise. Another point to support pro-choice is that you can only get an abortion during the first trimester of the pregnancy. During those first few weeks, the baby isn’t even developed and most of the time when an abortion is done, the fetus doesn’t even have a heartbeat.

The primary reason why abortion should be legal is that women should have control over what happens to their own bodies. Since it falls under the category of women’s rights, it’s not a surprise that feminists fight for this cause. Professor in political science, Terri Susan Fine of Valencia College, mentions in her Journal of Internation Women’s Studies that abortion is very much associated with the feminist movement. She states that “[s]upport for abortion fights is one example of a policy debate framed as a feminist issue in the 1960s that continues to be contentious” (127). This comes to show that while this topic may be controversial and opinionated, it is still a female’s personal autonomy, anatomy, and decision. Even if it is getting her pregnancy terminated. Taking away the right to an abortion would also mean that you are taking away the right to choose what a woman does with her own body. Fine also continues by saying, “[T]he debate over abortion fights continues at all levels and within all branches of government today” (127). This demonstrates that society, as well as people in the government office, have strong opinions on abortion. But the opinions of others shouldn’t determine whether or not it should be legal. One thing still stands— it’s still a topic on what happens with a woman’s body. And that is something that the woman gets to decide. Making abortions illegal would be taking away a big part of a female’s right to choose what happens to her own body and her individualism.

The Abortion Rights Movement has been around since the 1960s, and feminists have been striving since then to keep abortions legalized. So was it all for nothing? I hope not. Women should still be in charge of what happens with their bodies, even if the choice is a difficult one. As Fine said, “Equality takes many forms including equal treatment, equitable treatment, and personal autonomy” (126). If you agree and want to support the movement, there are ways to help. Don’t stay silent; make your voice heard. Donate to organizations, and funds that support the pro-choice cause. And to all the men that are saying that abortions should be illegal— remember what Rachel Green said, “No uterus, no opinion.”
