Abraham Lincon created his “Apple of Gold” speech to illustrate the importance that the Constitution has on the Declaration of Independence. Now although these two historical articles played a very vital part in forming America’s government, the Constitution would not have been as effective if the Declaration of Independence had not have been written. The Declaration of Independence lays out all of the injustices that were fought and led the United States to gain independence from Great Britain. The Constitution establishes the rules that will be enforced in order to keep America strong and united. While these two compositions helped to shape the United States, it is evident that the Constitution was drafted to decorate the Declaration of Independence.

In the Declaration of Independence, one of the American principles stated is that all men are created equal. The equal meaning of this statement is not attributing to an individual, but rather the equality of the people as a whole would have the right to self government. This principle had the potential to help America prosper and become a great nation that comes together in harmony, however, shortly after independence from Great Britain was declared, the statement was taken advantage of and abused. Americans started to translate the statement to match their own personal needs and desires. For example, the salve owners in the south chose to see this saying as everyone but salves were created equal. This abuse however was addressed in the Fourteenth Amendment which granted citizenship to all people who were born or raised in the United States. All men are created equal is written in the Declaration of Independence to give equality to America as a whole, while the Constitution provides a way to make this equality a reality.

The Declaration of Independence also shines light on many grievances that American colonists had to suffer through to gain independence. One grievance was taxation. The king of Great Britain enforced taxes on the people without their consent which caused a great deal of financial issues in the United States. King Geroge III divided that they had the right to tax the colonists without approval. The king planned on using the tax money was to help give relief from the costs of the French and Indian War and to expand his territories. Another grievance mentioned in the Declaration of Independence is the colonists were not allowed to speak out against the king. King George III abused his power but not premitting the Americans to question his decisions or his laws. In order to remain in the highest power, he stripped the people of their freedom and rights which left them with helpless and vulnerable to the his authority. While these grievances put the American colonists through tough times, it helped reveal the injustices within Great Britain that were not worth sticking around for. These hardships of taxation and no freedom of speech gave America no choice but to fight for independence and gain back their rights.

The Constitution’s purpose is to set rules for the government and most importantly protect the rights of American citizens. Taxation is addressed in the Constitution in Article 1. It talks about how all states have representation in Congress which set taxes. People may not be able to directly vote on taxes but it is true that every state will be represented in Congress which makes the taxes. Not having a voice was addresses in the First Amendment of the Bill of Rights. It gives the freedom of speech, assembly, and press to the people. American citizens are allowed the right to express their opinions without restriction and share their voice on different issues that arise within the government. Although America has been through so much oppression which the Declaration of Independence explains, the Constitution is there to prove that those injustices have been made right.

America has come a long way from being enslaved under King George III’s power to declaring independence and fixing all the injustices that were faced. The Declaration of Independence states the twenty seven grievances that the American colonists had to endure. The Constitution then confronts these problems and comes up with a solution on how to make sure theses do not become issues in the future. Both articles are important because it explains America’s history behind the government set up and the liberties that are freely given to citizens. Despite saying this, Abraham Lincoln was correct in his comparison with the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. The Constitution was created to illuminate the importance of the Declaration of Independence.
