There are many quotes that Sherman Alexie the writer of Absolute True Diary of a Part-Time Indian has said that kinda make sense for an identity novel. Some of them are “If you let people into your life a little, they can be pretty damn amazing.” and another one is “Life is a constant struggle between being an individual and being a member of the community.” well they make sense to use in the book Absolute True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie, The setting and the characters and the plot of the book-shaped Jr.’s identity by helping him see what he wanted in life and what he liked and wanted to do instead of what the people on the reservation wanted it to be.

So there is a setting in every good book and in this book it impacts Jr. it impacts him in a very big way, to be honest. So there is a school on the reservation that he lives on and he does not like it that much but it helps him become the person that he is at the end of the book because he feels like he can be different from what everybody is. Most high schoolers want to fit in and be all cool, but at his new school, he can. But he ends up not being all cool but ends up just being himself. Another place in the book is the school on the reservation is not what he wants. He wants to learn and be with people that want to learn as he does. The last place that has a big impact on him is the school in town and he likes it. He makes a lot of friends that care about him.

There are characters in the book that also have a big impact on him. One of them is Penelope who is his girlfriend. She helps him figure out that he does not have to pretend to be somebody else even though he is, well… different. She helps him know that he will be loved as well. Another person in the book is Gordy your typical nerd but little do you know he is the person that I think impacted Jr. the most he helps him figure out how to get serious about reading and studying and helps him become a better person he is also his first friend at his new school. Now we can’t forget about Roger. He is your typical. Jock, that is athletic and the overall complete opposite, of Jr. but he has a big impact he is nice to Jr. after he punches him in the face. He helps him find out that he is cool and even helps him go on a few dates with Penelope.

Last but not least, we have the plot. You may be asking how does that impacts Jr. well it does you see at the beginning of the book you meet Jr. the sad little defective kid he lives on a reservation and is poor he is very smart but cannot live up to his full potential at the reservation school that he goes to. In the middle of the book, you see him a bit happier, and even though he has lost his best friend, he is happy because he has people the care about his education even though he still is a bit sad. At the end of the book, he is happy he has a girlfriend, and he is not alone. He has friends and is even somewhat popular. To be completely honest, this sounds a little like Mean Girls, but it ends a lot better.

In conclusion, this book is a good example of how a setting, other characters, or the plot can change a character as it did in this book with Jr. He is impacted by the reservation the school on the reservation and the school that is not on the reservation. The characters impact him too. Penelope, his girlfriend, Gordy, is his study buddy and another friend as well and Roger kinda ends up being his friend and wingman. The plot also has an impact on him, as most plots do. This is an amazing and well-written book and I totally would recommend it to anyone that asks.
