Admission Essay Example: Culver-Stockton College

From the time we started kindergarten to the time we finished highschool we were constantly asked the question, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” When asked this question as a child I never really knew how to answer. Did I want to be a dentist, a veterinarian, or maybe even an actor? Once my time as a highschool student was coming to an end I finally found the answer. I wanted to become a teacher, not just a teacher but specifically an elementary special education teacher. 

Many people become teachers because they enjoy being around kids, are interested in a specific subject matter, or may just want job security. For myself that is not the case. I want to become a teacher because I truly enjoy helping others. Becoming a teacher will allow myself to help students by helping them to reach their full potential, and succeed in life. I did not come up with this idea of becoming a teacher all on my own. I had some influences throughout my life. One of those influences being my mom. My mom is a LPN (licenced practical nurse), and seeing her always helping others allowed me to find my passion for helping others. Last but not least my third grade teacher Mrs. Niffen is what really inspired me to become a teacher. Mrs. Niffen showed me that school and learning can be fun. Not only this but she also allowed me to help around the classroom such as helping her grade papers, and really showed me what it took to be a teacher. Without her I do not think I would have ever chosen the teaching profession. 

According to the internet the definition of a teacher is a person who teaches, especially in a school. I disagree with this definition because once a teacher I will strive to be the best teacher I can be and more. When instructing the class I plan to create an exciting learning environment where the class will participate in activities to get them engaged in learning. Rather than stand in the front of a classroom and read a lecture from a book. I plan to approach my students by almost becoming their friend and someone they can trust or come to for anything. All the while still making sure to be a role model and authority figure in the students lives. Lastly, I also plan to have an approach to the students' families which is constant communication. I will make an effort to communicate with every student's parents one on one to discuss the needs of their child and where they may need a little more help. 

I want to become a teacher because of my passion for helping others. I want to help students reach their fullest potential. I want to help students succeed not only in my classroom and in school, but in life. I want to help improve the lives of my students. That is why I have chosen to attend Culver-Stockton College. Here I will be able to gain all the knowledge, experience, and requirements I need to become the successful teacher I want to be.
