Admission Essay Example: Georgetown College

Education is something that is found everywhere. In all shapes and sizes, there are ways to extend one’s knowledge. But it is more than just feeding information to your brain for it to keep. Education isn’t just what you take in from your elementary schools, middle schools, and high schools. It isn’t just fixated on grades and test scores. This is something you find through family, friends, strangers, posters, social media, and more. The Oxford dictionary defines the act of being educated as “to be raised with a particular set of beliefs or values.” The word “raised” is interesting because this means that you had to have gone through your whole life preparing for the real world where you can apply these values, and also doing little things along the way. Education isn’t just being told how to think and feel. It is understanding, individually, the things that you will value more than others. After receiving all of this knowledge from the people and things around you, the question is: what do you do with it? This is what I believe to be where the true meaning of being educated is found.

It is about the person you become beyond this education. Being educated builds you into the person that you are meant to be. It not only benefits you but other people around you as well. The idea is that we learn new skills and ideas that we can pass onto people around us. We are all teachers in some way and we must remember our duty to bestow these values to our students, meaning everyone that surrounds us in our day-to-day life. Being educated changes your virtues and values as a person. Your character is being put to the test everyday and you must apply what you have grown to understand over the years. You can apply it in countless ways, whether that is through helping a friend, going with your gut in a decision, or simply taking responsibility for your actions. These are the kinds of things that reflect your true colors and values that you have obtained over the years. Working with people is another prominent aspect that you can apply your morals. In these situations, you have to be able to provide a meaningful experience to your team or the people you are trying to help. This is something that we are taught young because in a classroom, there are so many group projects and ways to apply your skills that involve teamwork. This collaborative effort appears frequently in future years. It benefits others around you when you are able to effectively work with others and can treat others with the respect you understand as they deserve.

In my alumni interview with James Cunningham, I asked what he found to be the most important takeaway from Georgetown following his graduation. He stated that he learned how to write. Learning how to write seems like a simple task, like something that every highschool student, even James Cunningham, has gone over. But there is obviously something different about what Georgetown has to offer. This extension of education and adding onto what you already know is something that Georgetown has perfected. I want to be able to apply a concept that I have learned into the real world but in multiple ways. Attending Georgetown College is what should prepare me for what I am to find beyond it, whether that be in a job position or working with the people around me. I want to carry my education into something meaningful and something that would make it worthwhile. Making changes, big or small, in the world using what I have been informed of throughout the years is something that I believe Georgetown College can prepare me for.
