I am interested in the Homestead Sports Medicine internship because getting more involved with the athletes at Homestead will give me a better understanding of the sports medicine profession. I’ve been participating in sports ever since I can remember. Dance, then soccer, martial arts, swimming, cheer, and even gymnastics. Joining different sports teams has helped me become a team player and has taught me to keep an open mind. Starting in my Freshman year of high school, I joined Homestead’s cheerleading team. During sophomore year, I decided to play soccer for Homestead’s soccer team. I first learned about the Sports Medicine internship when I got injured playing soccer and was able to witness the student trainers helping the athletes during their recovery and I have been interested in joining the program ever since. I have been interested in sports medicine since middle school, so much so that starting in the second semester of sophomore year, I joined a kinesiology class as part of the dual enrollment program that Homestead offered. While in this class, not only did my interest in sports medicine increase but I also learned about important topics related to both sports and medicine such as types of injuries and how they can occur, how the rehabilitation process works, how to tape or wrap certain parts of the body for support and so much more. This class easily became my favorite and I can say with certainty that I’ve learned a lot about injuries and how to work well in fast-paced environments. Another part of my kinesiology class was focused on CPR. I learned how to perform CPR on adults, toddlers, as well as babies and we even got to practice using an AED on CPR dummies. After a lot of practice and patience, I became CPR certified at the end of the course. The skills learned in the Kinesiology class will be useful in sports medicine because not only will I be able to help athletes on their road to recovery, but in case of emergencies, I will be well prepared on what to do. Aside from having first-hand experience being a Homestead athlete, I am also very familiar with many of the different sports that Homestead offers, and therefore I will be able to help athletes with the right rehabilitation for their injuries and get them back on the playing field as soon as possible. I’m hardworking and committed, and I can work well with others (especially Maya), and I believe that the Sports Medicine Internship would be a good fit for me. I also went on a field trip with Homestead’s Sports Medicine club to Santa Clara University to check out their training room and equipment. While there, Santa Clara’s sports trainers told us their personal stories of how they became interested in Sports Medicine. It was really interesting to hear all the different perspectives of the profession and really cool to see all the different equipment that they have to help the athletes. In college, I would like to pursue a career in medicine, specifically sports medicine. Being in this internship will allow me to ensure that this career is a good fit for me.
