Admission Essay: Ophthalmologist in Cal State Northridge

Newton’s First Law of Motion states that an object in motion tends to stay in motion in the same direction unless acted upon by an external force. The external force that changed my direction of motion was when I got orbital cellulitis. Orbital cellulitis gave me an appreciation for life that I had not seen before. Even to this day, there was no clear cause for this infection in my eye, and the doctors told me they only have a couple of cases every couple of years. It truly was a scary moment in my life because there was a chance that if the infection got bad enough, I could have needed surgery on my eye to fix the problem. This whole situation caused me to steer into the direction of becoming an ophthalmologist and helping kids in the future who have the same problem I had. 

Although having an infection with a scary name on it be in your system and staying in a hospital for 3 days to fix it, you gain a brand new appreciation for life and what you have. For the first time in my life, I truly acknowledged that I was lucky to have two working eyes. This changed my path in life and I could never imagine not having two working eyes in my life and I am so grateful for the opportunity I had so I could feel the new appreciation I have. As you can imagine, having such a memorable event happen to someone at a young age can change their path and their thoughts on certain matters. Change in direction could be anything, however, in my case it was my career choice and what I choose to pursue in the medical field whereas before I could not tell you what direction I wanted to head. 

Even though being in the medical field is a challenging field, it is the only career that would prove to satisfy me and my need for doing something very challenging and rewarding in my life. An Ophthalmologist I believe is a very careful and high-risk, high reward job. That would fit my needs perfectly. According to Newton’s first law of motion, if an object is in motion, it will stay in motion until an external force is applied and changes the direction of the object. This event was the external force that was applied to change the direction of the object. Most people in life have a life-changing event occur, I believe life has a weird way of steering people towards that event so they can have a revelation about what they should do in their lives. 

All things considered, life has a very interesting way of changing people's lives by throwing certain events into their lives to change their life’s direction. For me, a rare eye infection that causes still can’t be figured out was my life-changing event. This is why I choose to attend Cal State Northridge to pursue my goal in life to become an ophthalmologist and start the path of my career. It will be a challenging road and it is a road that I will need to follow to satisfy my needs of becoming the best person I can be as well as helping people in my life. Helping others makes me feel like I did something so maybe one day I can be the doctor that changes a young boy's or girl's life and create a life-changing event.
