I love the term “Boss Lady” because of what it signifies to me. When I hear this term I envision a strong, independent woman that is out in the world running her own business or company. She possesses exceptional organizational, communication, problem-solving, and leadership skills. Throughout my life, I have exhibited most of these qualities in everyday life, but it is through my undertaking of personal projects that I have found an interest in all tasks involving business. By understanding and learning how to apply the skills of a “Boss Lady” to everyday life I believe that I will be able to reach each of my professional goals and grow as a person.

At a young age, my passion for animals led me to not only become enthralled in any and every animal book but also into charities that helped these animals I was reading about. After attending and volunteering in several of the local charities around East Tennessee I decided I wanted to try my hand at creating my own fundraiser. As a personal project, I started Walk for Paws, which was a walking event that brought together a community of dog owners. All of which were inclined to donate to help feed and afford 6 months’ worth of medicals for the locally run Dames for Danes foundation. While reaching my goal was the highlight of the entire experience, creating the event was equally rewarding. During the process, I was forced to step out of my comfort zone when it came to contacting people about attending or just giving donations. I believe this fundraiser was the start of my interest in business and communications.

As I researched about what makes someone successful in business I discovered that someone has to be an apt critical thinker, problem-solver, and organizer. While I was reading I started thinking about all of the times I had embodied these traits, not just in life but in creating Walk for Paws. When deciding on an event and place I used critical thinking skills to create an idea that would showcase what I was raising money for. Once I decided on my event and started spreading the word I ran into several problems with the weather. In these moments I had to come up with quick solutions for spreading the word that the date of the event had changed. Similarly, by creating a well-thought-out timetable with information on release dates I showcased my ability to manage my time and stay organized. Over the years I have continued to enhance these qualities by creating smaller personal tasks for myself that have led me to develop these qualities in new ways. However, I feel the best way to optimize these abilities is through classes.

Moving forward I hope to apply this love for business and communications to my major. For my undergraduate major, I want to complete a bachelor's in animal biology and be accepted into veterinary school following the completion of my undergraduate. After achieving my doctorate of veterinary medicine I want to eventually own my own clinic. I live for making goals and especially reaching those goals. By owning my own clinic I would be reaching one of my life goals. But in order to do this, I believe that a degree in business and communications is needed to start and run a successful clinic. Once I own my own clinic I can use the skills I learned in school to start more of my own charities, build my own team, and make decisions to better my clinic that bring in more patients.

Obtaining an education in business in communications will not only help me to reach my life goals but help develop myself as a person. Applying each of the skills I mastered in school not only to work-life but my personal life will allow me to become an organized individual that is able to provide for herself, her family, and her coworkers. I will be able to manage tough situations will a calculated eye and decide on a solution that is beneficial for all parties. Furthering my education in the field of business and communications through the Honors Program of Berry College will allow me to become the “Boss Lady” I have revered for so long.
