What am I doing for my Field Experience, you may ask? I am going into Austin Elementary and doing my internship with 2nd graders. Being in the environment and seeing it with my own eyes, I have learned a lot. Not only do I experience it with my eyes, but I actually do hands on activities as well. While being there in person, you see and learn things that most people don´t, while just reading about it.

First thing, I am able to have conversations with my mentor and learn from her experiences. For me to learn a little more I asked her some questions. Question 1, What are you giving to teaching and what are you getting in return? ¨ I currently am pursuing a master’s degree, so I feel like I am giving a constant variety of strategies to try with students, whether it be tied to engagement or lesson planning or assessments, just a lot of variety when it comes to figuring out what works for my specific group of students. In return, I feel like I am getting the ability to adapt and be practicing resilience. It’s been a strange year in many ways and I feel like I’m getting a lot of opportunities to grow.¨ Question 2, What do you enjoy most about teaching? ¨I enjoy building a relationship with students the most. Getting to know students and using information about them to help them learn and grow. For example, if they love Pokémon or Minecraft, using their interests to help them learn.¨ I love how she thinks about her students' interests and tries to help them learn with what they love. Another Question I asked her was, what has changed over the years for her? She said that her students are always changing. Like, kids with SPED, autstic, and dyslexic. She says she is constantly learning how to adapt to  them and what their needs are. Then I asked her, how have your career expectations changed? She said, ¨ the amount of support I've needed as a teacher has changed. At the beginning I needed a lot of support and as I've gotten more familiar with curriculum, teaching strategies and working with students the amount of support I expect has changed.¨ The last question I asked was, What important lessons have you learned? Her response, ¨I’ve learned a lot about classroom management for example which battles to fight, and which ones would be okay overlooking.¨ All of her responses tie into her actually teaching that I have observed. I have realized a lot from observing real life teaching. For example, what the media shows and what teaching is actually like. I feel like the media does not show enough of the hardships that teachers go through. Teachers in real life are so much stronger than people think they actually are. They go through some hard things and need to be recognized for those things. I have also learned a lot of things that have surprised me. Especially during these times and going through the pandemic. One thing is that kids understand and do great with a group, but when alone struggle. Now, it's not really surprising to me, because that is just how some people learn. When you really think about it, it really is surprising that they can fully get it one minute, then totally forget it the next. The other thing I have seen is the teacher's motive for teaching. For me for example, I am on fire for teaching and that's all I want to do is get in the classroom and teach. It is a little different for more experienced teachers. They have seen all the ups and downs within teaching. They know what can happen on a daily basis and some aren't as fire up. I am not saying that they don't love their job, I am just saying they might just not be as excited as I, a non-experienced teacher, is. Since I have talked and seen things that teachers have to deal with everyday, me becoming a teacher has been questioned in my mind. For example, when I was observing and some kids got into an argument about some kid saying ¨ hi sister¨, it got me thinking, do I want to deal with little things like that. Do I want to deal with this petty drama. I feel like every teacher goes through that stage. I actually want to become a teacher more now than ever while in this field experience.
