The reason for this letter is about the H.R.6 Bill, the American Dream and Promise Act of 2021. This bill was introduced on March 3rd, 2021 by Representative Lucille Roybal-Allard of the 40th district of California. On March 3rd, you cosponsored this bill, and I would like your continued support on this bill.

As a citizen in San Diego, and as a second-generation immigrant, this bill is very important to me and my family, as we know how difficult immigrating is in this country. I fully support this bill and appreciate your sustained support as well. According to the Biden administration, an estimated 16,000 children were taken into custody in the month of March 2021 from the U.S. southern border, and it is only expected to rise as time goes on. “Dreamers” refer to undocumented minors who were brought into the U.S as children. The Supreme Court ruled in June of 2020 that Dreamers will be protected from deportation, but after the minor becomes an adult, there is no protection against deportation.

We need this Dream Act of 2021 in order to offer help to those previous Dreamers who have now become adults and have no path left. Thousands of children who have lived their entire lives in the U.S, and have been perfect citizens are at risk for deportation. Many of these children had no alternative when they came with their family across the border, and only know the U.S. as their home. It’s not fair to these children who have lived their lives in the U.S to be suddenly uprooted from the only home they have known simply because they have become an adult, especially when they are offered no way out. Our current policies are not ethical as they essentially doom these children as soon as they grow up.

The American Dream and Promise Act will provide these Dreamers temporary protection from deportation while giving them an opportunity to obtain permanent legal status after they meet certain requirements. This bill would finally give Dreamers a chance at legality rather than simply deporting them after they become an adult. This bill will not simply give any dreamer documentation, but rather require a list of provisions in order to ger conditional residence, and eventually permanent residence. In order to ensure not just any Dreamer can take advantage of this bill, without doing any actual work, this Act works as more of an internship. In order to be eligible for this Act, Dreamers must prove that they have earned at least a high school diploma in order to get conditional residence. In order to receive permanent residence, a bachelor’s degree, military service, or stable job is required. This bill additionally requires a government background check for security reasons. This bill will allow those who have been perfect citizens a chance at legality, rather than being immediately deported despite any other circumstances.

This bill is important to me because I feel that it is only fair to offer a pathway to legal status to those that have benefitted here, in the only home they have known, rather than deporting them indisputably. These diligent workers have no reason to be deported simply because of their age. I believe that everyone who works hard enough deserves a chance at their dreams and that these people deserve that at the very least. We must work to accommodate those who are an integral part of our community as well as our economy, and many of them have helped us through this pandemic.

When we give these Dreamers a path to citizenship, many of these hard workers will be able to continue their studies or work which will help our economy, without fear of deportation. I would greatly appreciate your continued support as co-sponsor of this bill as it would help give these hard-working Dreamers a chance at documentation. In return for your support on H.R.6, you will receive my vote, along with many of my family and friends, as well as my strong advocation for you. Thank you for standing up for the hard-working immigrants of this country and giving them the chance that they deserve. America was founded on the promise of freedom and opportunity, it is our duty that we give every deserving person a chance at this freedom.
