If I was in Montage’s position and I had to save one book, I would save Elephant in the Garden. The reason I would save this book is because it’s a true story, it was during WWII and it is a really moving story.

The premise of this story is about a family who saves a baby elephant. Lizzie’s mother is a zookeeper at Dresden Zoo. The zoo officials decide that the animals must be shot if their city is bombed. Lizzie's mother convinces them to let her keep the baby elephant that she had been caring for. For a while, they kept Marlene (elephant) in their garden, but they did not anticipate the fires that would be caused by the bombings of February 1945. Lizzie (sixteen at the time), Karli (brother), her mom and the elephant set foot on a mid-winter journey to the safety of a relative's rural home. Once they arrived at the house they found Peter, a Canadian flyer working for the Nazis. His plane had been shot down. The mom was not happy about befriending the enemy but they quickly befriended him after he saved Karli from falling through the ice.

This story is a true story and it is one of my favorite books. I read this book in fourth grade and through these years the messages have still stuck with me. This book taught me to never judge a book by its cover. By this I mean never to judge a person by how they apear. Even though Peter was working for the enemy, Lizzie’s family decided to help him and take him with them. Along the way, he helped them with shelter and food. Years later Peter and Elizabeth actually got married.

To sum it up, I would save Elephant in the Garden because it’s a true story, it was during WWII and it is a really moving story with good life lessons.
