How long has it been?  A long time to say the least.  Time had taken its toll, and Batman hasn’t been the same since he retired.  He sold his mansion, Batmobile, and all of his machines once he came to Gotham City.  Who was he?  Batman preferred not to name him, so neither shall I.  But to say the least, he was a new hero.  Before this new hero arrived, Batman had it all; a luxurious life, the admiration of all the citizens and even the key to the city.  But did he really have everything he ever wanted, or was this just want he settled for?

This story begins on a gloomy, summer night.  These kinds of evenings were Batman’s favourite, because they were the best for brooding, and doing other Batman things.  Whilst contemplating notions far beyond our comprehension, he spotted the Bat-Signal.  After he and Robin arrived at the scene in the Batmobile, they arrived to see something they could have never expected.  The police were arresting Joker for his crime, and his job was already done.  Looking around, he was bewildered.  Who dares to arrest Joker in my city? He wondered to himself.  Suddenly Batman spotted a man with the police he had never seen before.

“Who is he?” Batman asked Robin as he glowered at this man.  He was tall, and was wearing somewhat of a costume also.  But he wasn't just a regular citizen of Gotham City.  With further inspection, Batman could also see that he was hovering over the ground.

“I don't know…” Robin replied, curiosity in his tone.  He was also taken aback by this sudden change of events, and this strange man.

“Lets go,” Batman said with a deeper voice than before, turning back to the Batmobile.  They got in the Batmobile, and sped home.  When Alfred asked him what was wrong during supper, Batman didn't respond.  Although he would never admit it, that day made him feel sort of upset.  Little did he know, this wasn't the last of this new hero.  The events just kept repeating themselves.  He saw the signal, drove to the crime, and it was already taken care of.  Batman took a minute to himself one day after this happened to think it through.  This new hero was younger than he, and had super powers.  After long and hard consideration, Batman decided that his days of being the city’s favourite bat were over.

After that, as I mentioned earlier, Batman sold everything.  Once he left the mansion, Batman moved into an apartment in the city.  Robin decided to join the new hero, since he really didn't have any expertise outside of being a sidekick.  Nowadays, Batman spent time eating cheap Chinese takeout and looking through his old photos when he felt the need.  Every now and then he wished that he was still the hero. But it was for the best.  This hero was younger, less destructive to the city, and (although he would never say it out loud) he had real super powers.  After a while, Batman realised something.  He had always wanted to be just a normal guy.  The whole Batman thing was fun while it lasted, but he decided to make the most of his new life.  As time passed, Batman began to enjoy his new freedom more than his heroic status.  He got to go to the movies, grocery store, and carnival without being swarmed by people.  And if he was honest with himself, this was a blessing in disguise.  Besides, getting to eat cotton candy in a theme part peacefully was better than the key to the city any day.
