The story “Home” by Gwendolyn Brooks is about a family who is afraid of not having an extension of being able to pay for their home. They risk losing it along with the two girls being afraid of their father being disappointed. In the end, they get the extension. This story shows to be thankful for having things, even if you lose them, or risk losing them, be thankful for what you still have.

At the beginning of this story, the girls mention how if the family doesn't get the extension on their house they will have to move to a different type of house. They risk moving into a new home that doesn't have any memories, this saddens the papa. In the story, it says “they would be leaving this house, which they had been living in for more than fourteen years” This shows the theme because even if they leave their house with all the things they did, all the memories they have there, they will always still remember that home, it will always be a special place for them.

In the middle of the story the girls keep worrying that their father is going to be devastated and that they have to leave their house, they keep worrying about him, not themselves. The story says “He loves this house! He lives for this house” This reflects the theme because when the girls worry about losing the house I can infer the girls think at least I still have something, however the papa worries, he also thinks he has lost a big part of himself, it is as if he loses a part of him, part of his personality.

In the end, the father comes home, not worried at all, and tells the rest of his family they got the extension on their home. The girls and wife were very anxious, not as much about actually losing the house but about how upset the father will be. The text uses strong words to create a more powerful sentence. One example is “it’s just going to kill papa!” The use of the word kill gives it a negative connotation. This shows the theme by showing the father will be upset and sad, not to lose the house itself, but the memories they have there.

Another thing that happens in the end, the family is very happy about how they kept the house, they talk about throwing a party, they are overall very happy. In the text, the girl says that she is very happy about being a homeowner and saying she might throw a party to celebrate. This shows the theme because she is showing her thankfulness and happiness through saying this.  This story teaches us a lesson on risking losing something you love so much and being upset about it. It shows us an example of how we shouldn’t feel, this is shown by the girls constantly talk about how the papa would be devastated If they ended up losing it,  conversely, he could feel thankful for the time he had, the memories made, and what new memories and events are in the future.

Overall, the story “Home” by Gwendolyn was about a family struggling to pay for their home. The fear of not getting their extension causes the girls to worry that the papa will be distressed. They ended up getting an extension to pay for their house. This story shows to be thankful for having things, even if you risk losing it, or lose it, be thankful for what you still have.
