Line, space, shape; these are examples of a universal language, the language of art. Paul Baker’s elements of form are a way of expression through all art forms, including literature. Nabil Kanso’s Othello series reflects the theme of jealousy in Shakespeares’s Othello through its use of movement, shape, and color.

In art, color is usually used in the process of illustrating the mood, however the colors can further illuminate the theme. In “Othello Series” by Nabil Kanso the grim and fading colors greatly contradict the bright single shaded red. The use of bright red in the painting exposes to the viewer that there is a connection to the chaos occurring within the painting with Othello and Desdemona in the center that enriches the concept that

jealousy runs deep within Othello. Thus, color can exemplify aspects of Othello’s jealousy that he tries to conceal.

When talking about shape you don’t usually think of how it can portray the mood of a piece of art, yet the shape  can further demonstrate the theme of a piece. In “Othello Series” by Nabil Kanso the loose and overlapping shapes immensely highlight the chaos within the painting. The loose shape of figures in the painting alludes to the viewer that there is a relationship between the use of overlapping shapes and the notion that jealousy is usually spread between people and is not always your original state of mind. Hence, shape can illustrate aspects of people's rumor and the spread of lies and deceit.

Movement, in art, is oftentimes used to display specific emotions, yet can still drive viewers to the theme. In “Othello Series” by Nabil Kanso the great movement within the piece notably coincides with the long textured brush strokes of the painting. The adjacency of the loose movement of the piece to the fluidity of the long brush strokes highlight the chaos within the story of Othello. The obscure movement illustrates the chaos that Iago has aused out of his jealousy for Michael Cassio and Othello. To this extent, movement can exemplify Iago’s jealousy and what later leads to Othello’s jealousy.

To accentuate the theme of jealousy in Shakespeare's Othello, the artist utilizes color, shape, and movement. It is through these elements of form that the viewers recognize that the jealousy rooted throughout the story of Othello is depicted through ill-defined shapes and loose chaotic movements Along with harsh colors such as red and black to elevate the theme of jealousy.
