The character development of Androcles, the emperor, and the lion helps advance the plot in the story. In passage 1 Androcles escaped from his master which entails that he is a fighter and survivor. After Androchles escaped he heard a lion and the lion came upon him. The lion was injured and as the lion approached Androcles he didn’t run away or fight him, this showed that Androchles was kind-hearted and had the courage to help an animal that could kill him. After Androchles helped the lion out the lion was relieved, for what Androchles did would help him later in the story.

In passage 2 Androchles is captured and sentenced to death, thrown in with a lion nothing but a spear to protect himself. As he is thrown in the cage the lion doesn't attack him and the Emperor is surprised. The lion didn’t attack Androncles because he helped him when he was hurt. In this passage, it seems that the Lion and Androcles have an understanding or some sort of bond with each other. This helps the plot of the story because the emperor still doesn’t really understand the importance of the lion to Androchles who he pardons in this passage.

In passage 4  the king tells the sorceress to kill the lion and right after the lion runs up to the emperor and he runs and hides. Androchles tells him not to put the lion down and to not be afraid of him. This back and forth happens until the last few passages at the end of the story. Now that the emperor isn't afraid of the lion anymore he can trust that Adrinochles won’t let the Lion be dangerous and can scare the people in his court.

Androchles help the plot of the story by staying kindhearted and having courage throughout the story. The lion once he knew Androcles can be trusted became this protector of Andronchles, They both have a bond that helped them throughout the story and drove the plot. The emperor in a way united them together again even though he was afraid and hid behind his prestige he also had an understanding at the end of the story. All these factors the lion, the emperor, and Androchles helped the plot of the story through their development.
