Animals Should Not Be Kept in Zoos Essay Example

I agree with Ray Hernandez that animals should not be kept in zoos. Zoos don’t help animals, often times zoos harm animals. Zoos don’t give animals the correct living spaces they need. Animals should have enough space rome free, and not be stuck in small spaces. The diets that zookeepers are feeding animals are not what they should be. The food animals are getting are not natural and can’t compare to the food they eat in the wild. Endangered species are not being saved by zoos. Animals loose years of their lives when kept in captivity.

First, the food that zoos are giving animals are improper and are no where near what they eat in real life. The food that some zoos give animals actually cause sickness, because it’s not what the animal should be getting. The food in zoos dosn’t give animals the right amount of vitamins that they need. Animals in the wild have 4 times more vitamins than the animals in captivity. Some animals have extremely strict diets in the wild, but are given carless diets in zoos. Zoos don’t give animals the food or nutrients that they need.

Second, the enclosures in zoos are way to small for bigger animals to be living in. Studies have shown that when an enclosure is to small an animal can become stressed just like humans. Animals get anxious and start to pace, making them not feel as well. Some animals such as the Giraffe, Elephant, and rino all live in groups. And when this animal is kept in a small enclosure without its tower, herd or crash, that animal will eventually depressed. Not all zoos are like this but the ones that are, are no good place for an animal.

Third, zoos have done very little impact to the endangered species. In one way or another, zoos are actually hurting the animals by keeping them in captivity. When an animal is in captivity they loose around 10-14 years off of their life. For example, an elephant that lives in the wild lives for around 50-56 years. But the elephants in captivity only live to be 17-20 years old. By keeping animals in zoos, the amount of time for an animal to breed is cut in half. Animals don’t belong in zoos that will make their species extinct.

Zoos are not beneficial because they don’t help the growing problems in the animal world. Zoos are not a good place for animals to be safe. Because zoos don’t help with extinction, depression, or food habits. The animals in zoos should not be eating off of false diets that a zookeeper has given them. Animals should be free, not kept in zoos where they’re being mistreated.
