Character

The Army Leadership Requirements Model defines character as the Army Values, Empathy, Warrior Ethos, and Service Ethos, Discipline and Humility (Headquarters, Department of the Army, 2019). In Leaders Eat Last, Sinek writes about an air traffic controller who had a tough decision to make when a plain was having an emergency on board and needed to land as soon as possible. The glaring issue in this situation was that another aircraft was traveling below the distressed aircraft and two aircrafts in close proximity would be a cause for a major disaster. What made the situation even more stressful was that the pilots had little airspace to work with due to a military exercise close by. In the end, the air traffic controller had to make a quick decision to land the distressed aircraft in order to save the lives of all the passengers. He radioed the low flying aircraft telling him the situation and the decision he had made to ensure the safety of all. It was a risky call, but he knew that the plane needed to descend immediately in order to save the lives on that plane (Sinek, 2014). His personal courage and integrity to make this call was shown in his actions which represent his character. 

Presence

The Leader Attribute presence is critical to achieving a high-performing organizational environment that can leverage a supportive and well-managed work environment for soldiers. Presence is characterized by military bearing, professional bearing, fitness, confidence, and resilience (Headquarters, Department of the Army, 2019). Sinek describes that the key to organizational success is through the concept of empowering soldiers to make decisions through the embodiment of the presence of those leaders (Sinek 2014). When a leader demonstrates their presence, there is a chain reaction of accomplishment and joy shared throughout their subordinates. This positive chain reaction will build bonds of trust and camaraderie throughout that group. These positive reactions will limit the negative effects that anyone can see in a work environment, creating a safe workspace. Overall, a positive presence will lead to a unified unit, a cohesive team and they will create positive outcomes when working towards the same goals.

Intellect

Intellect is defined as mental agility, judgment, innovation, interpersonal tact, and expertise (Headquarters, Department of the Army, 2019). This attribute is shown as Sinek emphasizes a central role of relationships, community, and collaboration that drives units or groups to achieve even their toughest goals (Sinek 2014). This can specifically be seen in Leaders Eat Last at Johnny Bravo’s ability to quickly exercise his mental agility, judgment, and expertise to perform during a high stress situation where others depended on his strength and leadership (Sinek, 2014). He was able to grow his trust within his team and exhibit his dedication to serving others and showed his intellect and accomplish the mission to save the lives of the individuals around him. 

Leads*

The competency ‘Leads’ is directly related to influencing. As a leader, you are able to clearly instruct, encourage and recognize other successes in order to grow them into a future leader. Sinek describes serotonin as “the leadership chemical” (Sinek, 2014 pg. 57). Serotonin is responsible for the happiness and joy of someone. It can also be used as a driving force to obtain positive recognition from others through your successes. Presence also utilized the chemical of serotonin as stated before, as leading and presence will go hand and hand in order to succeed. Seeing others receive recognition and praise for their accomplishments reinforces the relationship of the leader to soldier and earns positive reassurance that will continue to spread throughout the unit. 

Develops

Develops is defined as prepares self, creating a positive environment, developing others, and stewards the profession (Headquarters, Department of the Army, 2019). Sinek emphasized the value of human interaction and connections when talking about developing others. When collaborating, we are mostly focused on the technological aspect where the convenience is there, but the overall human interaction has been lost. Army leaders must remember that physical interaction with others is how trust is developed, how others will feel as if they are worthy and part of a team and it overall ensures the growth and development of one's self and of others (Sinek, 2014). Developing does not have to mean sitting down and teaching about a topic or lesson but expanding the knowledge of the learners and building trust with the leader for them to confidently communicate in person. The value of investing time and energy over money is important when building the trust of a team and realizing the physical and chemical reactions that are necessary to strengthen a team.

Achieves

Achieves is characterized as getting results, anticipating, and integrating tasks and roles (Headquarters, Department of the Army, 2019). Sinek relates this competency when he describes a positive and safe working environment. He states that “instead of trying to command-and-control everything, the leaders devote all their energy to training, building, and protecting their people so that the people can command and control any situations themselves (Sinek, 2014 pg. 212). Though through the trust and delegation of tasks, you are able to not only display trust in that person as well as develop them to achieve success in their lives. This demonstrates that leaders are focused on their people and are willing to sacrifice personal gain to get the results from a team standpoint.
