March 13. For as long as we have known this day has been dedicated to daylight saving time. It is known to be the most sleep deprived day for people all over most of the country. The words, “Spring forward” may sound good, but they are not. In fact, most people dread hearing those words. Many believe that if we have daylight savings time all year that it would be good for the economy, but they would be wrong. Daylight savings time should not be all year round. Daylight savings time drastically affects our health and affects our sleep, especially in kids and teens. If you're a highschooler and you lose sleep, it feels like the end of the world.

If we look at daylight savings time from a different perspective all we see is that in March Everyone loses an hour of sleep. In what way can that be good for anybody? Losing an hour of Sleep is not fun for anyone no matter what age you are. Many people think that daylight savings cant have a big effect on them, but they obviously haven't done their research. In the source, “ Should we Stop Changing the Clocks?” it states, “ A one hour time disruption is enough to throw our whole body clocks out of sync. And that has many bad health consequences: we lose our ability to regulate our blood sugar”(Source 1). When your body is exposed to something it is aware of it goes into a fight or flight mode, which can lead to things like unregulated blood sugar. When our blood sugar is not regulated we can feel fatigued and dizzy, and no one wants that. Unregulated blood sugar is not the only health effect daylight savings time has on our bodies.

In the source, “Should we Stop Changing the Clocks?” it states,” we feel hungry when we’re not really hungry. Our immune systems function less efficiently and cancer rates increase”(Source 1). Daylight savings time can increase your risk of cancer? Yes, as it was just said,it can. Daylight savings time also affects our appetite. Because we lose an hour of sleep, the time that we would normally eat would be altered. If we eat lunch at 12 P.M. everyday, with daylight savings we would really be eating at 11 A.M. Eating when we are not really hungry can have other effects like gaining or losing weight. That is one reason why we should not have daylight savings all year round.

Our bodys run like clockwork to keep us healthy and alive. When someone or something disrupts our body’s cycle it can be damaging to us. As it was mentioned before daylight savings is not good for our health, but the reason behind that is because it disrupts our body's clock.Think of our body as an actual clock. If we let the clock do its thing and not touch it, it will last for a while. But, what happens when something disrupts the clock, it might not work as well anymore. That is exactly what happens when daylight savings time occurs. In the source, “Should we Stop Changing the Clocks?” it states,” [using standard time all year] would be a better choice for our health because our body clocks [are] better aligned to the rising and setting of the sun”(Source 1). This is why we should stick to standard time instead of daylight savings all year round. Changes in our body clocks are not good for anyone. A result of disrupting our body clocks would be the lack of sleep that we get because of daylight savings. In the source, “Should we Stop Changing the Clocks?” It states,” a 2015 study found that high school students lost an average of 32 minutes of sleep per night in the weeks after the time change” (Source 1).

Now, 32 minutes might not seem like that much time, but when you are a high school student 32 minutes of less sleep is worse than the zombie apocalypse. High school students need as much sleep as they can get to make up for the all night studying that they do. This was another reason to keep the standard time all year round. Many people think that daylight savings is a necessary component to living but it's not.

Many people who work at retail stores believe that daylight savings time will have a positiveeffect on the economy, but they would be wrong. In source 2, it states “ later daylight meansmore shopping after work [and] increasing retail sales”(Source 2). While many think this is what happens, what actually happens is that people are too sleep deprived from the time change to do any shopping. In Source 2 it states, “ the consequences of [ daylight savings] is that the majority of the population has drastically decreased productivity”(Source 2). After a long hard day's work, people are going to be tired and not want to go shopping, but want to go home and rest. Which is why daylight savings time is not good for anyone. All in all daylight savings time should not be all year round. Daylight savings can affect our health, affect our body's clock, and affect our sleep, especially in teens and kids. Not to mention that we lose the want to be productive. If something is working well, why change it? If we know using standard time works then why do we need to lose an entire hour of sleep?
