Did you know that at least 1335 deaths were at the hands of a concealed carrier? Leading many people to believe that people with concealed carrying licenses and RTC licenses could offer more protection, RTC and concealed carry laws should have restrictions because there is a direct correlation between the number of lethal crimes committed and the number of people being RTC licensed.  A person with little or no training from experts could jeopardize the community’s safety, plus, there are many legal issues that come when a weapon is used.

There is a direct correlation between the number of lethal crimes committed and the number of people being RTC licensed people. Every day more and more people are getting guns. Thus, leading many to say that having many people with concealed firearms will help to protect the community. Although this is true in some situations it also raises the chance of a confrontation becoming lethal. it can become lethal for either party of the interaction. If the person causing the confrontation is alerted that someone around them has a weapon, they could feel threatened and hurt someone whether it is a civilian or the person offering protection. The less people that own a weapon in a scenario where the argument is becoming intense the more likely it is a person will not be seriously injured. One study from places where RTC laws are in action states “Our synthetic control approach also strongly confirms that RTC laws are associated with 13-15 percent higher aggregate violent crime rates ten years after adoption.” (Donohue et al. Right-to-carry laws and violent crime: A comprehensive assessment using panel data and a state-level synthetic control analysis) Proving that just because there are more gun-trained people in the community doesn’t make it any safer. Furthermore, a former police captain who has concealed a weapon for many years killed a man over a petty argument.  “Curtis Reeves, a well-regarded former Tampa, Fla., police captain, allowed a mundane argument over cellphone texting in a movie theater to end in bloodshed and tragedy?” “Reeves, who carried a sidearm throughout a long police career, “should have known better than to open fire.” (Ewing Florida popcorn shooting: Are concealed guns about self-defense or power?) This, of many reasons show that restrictions should be put into place preventing someone who is easily aggravated from owning and carrying a sidearm.

Many people who own weapons don’t understand what a large impact they can cause on a community by just having a gun but not knowing how to use it. Although a large group of people may believe that once someone obtains a license, they understand what they are doing and know the power a sidearm has. This is not true because when someone obtains a permit to carry a weapon there is a decent chance, they have no training on how to properly use the sidearm. A survey taken by gun owners proves supports this idea. “Of gun owners who said they own a handgun for the sole purpose of protection, 57 percent said they had received formal training.” (Yablon 4 out of 10 self-defense handgun owners have received no formal firearms training) Meaning that 40% people don’t know what they are doing or the effects they could have on the community.” This is one of the predominant reasons that permits should have restrictions.

Finally, there are many legality issues that are brought into play when a weapon is used. The consequences of discharging a weapon, (whether self-defense or not) are still to be faced. When someone carries a weapon with a permit, they are still reliable for any damage or other charges someone may face. Charges are not dropped due to someone owning a weapon legally. You need to know exactly which criminal acts justify the use of force. You need to know if your state expects you as a citizen to make a reasonable effort to retreat prior to using deadly force. It is also important to know the common pitfalls and mistakes that can result from ignorance of the law or bad judgment.” (Wilson Legal information for concealed-carry permit holders). This shows a few of many legal issues faced when a weapon is used. One must not use the weapon unless completely necessary and have given proof on the weapons use. Not only this but if you are shown to have used the gun when not completely necessary the permit along with the weapon will be confiscated and that person will face legal trouble.

Overall, there are many justifiable reasons on why RTC and concealed carriers should have restrictions, from not knowing how to use the weapon to then number of lethal interactions and shootings caused by gun owners. They should implement some type of required training to show an understanding om how to properly use the gun before obtaining the weapon. Along with this background checks should be performed to show whether the person is in good health and know what they are doing. If there are implications to restrict who can carry and conceal a weapon, there will be less violent interactions and overall, the community will be safer.
