Argumentative Essay Sample: Homework is Beneficial
One day I came home with a packet of homework. I didn’t understand why there was so much. I asked my dad why they give so much homework, he told me that homework helps you study and prepare for the next day. Is homework beneficial? Yes it is, homework can give extra support on developing persistence and self-motivation. Homework also helps with tests and other assignments and tasks. Another reason why homework is beneficial is because it helps you prioritize and manage time.
Homework helps students to have the ability to self-motivate. In paragraph 2 it states, “These are skills that are fundamental to one’s in school, the workplace, and life in general.” The ability to self- motivate is a very big achievement as stated in the quote. Homework can help young children develop this skill. An example is stated in paragraph 3 that, “When they finish a set of math problems or put the final touches on a book review, they feel a sense of pride at having accomplished an assignment.” That sense of pride is part of their self-motivation. Pride motivates children to do more school work and feel more pride. In addition to that is, “They learn that a task can be rewarding even when at first it seems challenging.” Children feel that some of the things they do are hard, they often learn that as soon as they figure it out it is rewarding. Also with homework parents and family members can help out. They will lift their child's self- motivation levels.
Homework begins to mean a lot to students who start middle school. Students have to start taking tests and homework helps them to remember things. As stated in paragraph5 it says, “Homework helps them remember information and practice skills they will be tested on.” Homework can be considered a cheat sheet or even a study guide. Homework can help students excel in tests. In addition, the paragraph states that some tasks older students are given would be difficult to complete without being assigned as homework. Although there is a lot of homework it makes it easier on the teachers so they can teach what they need to in class and send kids home with work. “By assigning parts of ambitious tasks as homework, teachers are able to make the most efficient and effective use of limited class time”(para 6). So even though homework is getting piled up by your teachers, it makes it easier to get through a school day. Homework could be good practice for college. “There, they will find that instructors typically assign a large number of readings and projects to be completed entirely outside of class”(para 7). They give homework in college and it could be helpful.
The upper grades come home and may take an hour or more every night on homework. Even though that is a lot of homework to do every night it helps students manage time and set priorities. “While these experiences can be stressful, they do help students learn how to set priorities and manage time”(para 9). Homework may help you do things in the future. Homework helps you figure out how much time you have to do this and if you have free time. Homework can also help you remember the due dates on projects and assignments. In paragraph 7 it states that, “high school teachers help prepare their students for college life.” The reason they give so much homework is because teachers have so much to teach you in a short amount of time.
To sum up this argument that homework is beneficial. One last question is what type of homework is the most helpful? I believe all homework is helpful even though it can get overwhelming sometimes. Homework is important because it supports your development in persistence and self-motivation. Homework also helps as a study guide. Homework may also be beneficial in many ways.
