Argumentative Essay Sample: The Reality Of The Great Flood

The Bible is a very important piece of literature that every Christian should be familiar with. And of course, anyone who has read the Bible is well aware of the worldwide flood that occurred in the Genesis chapters of the Bible. This flood is believed by some to be fictional, however, that is simply not true. Due to geological, sedimentary, and overall scientific evidence, the flood that takes place in Genesis was undoubtedly real, and should be considered a historical event, not just a story.

First of all, fossil evidence found all over Earth are some of the most important pieces of evidence that point to the fact that this flood was real. For example, some plants and animals show evidence of being rapidly buried, “...fish that are busy eating another fish, animals that are giving birth, delicately preserved fossilized jellyfish, etc. These organisms could never have fossilized slowly,” (Sorensen). As you can see, there is simply no way that these types of fossilization could’ve happened slowly. In order to be fossilized, creatures must first die, then be buried in something. The animal must also be covered in some kind of sediment to become a fossil. This process takes a long time, in fact, it’s impossible for a creature to be fossilized while moving, because if death is not instant, the animal has time to struggle and move out of position, therefore capturing an animal eating or giving birth in a fossil is not possible. However, if death is instant, this becomes a possibility. The only way to have sediment covering the animal and have the animal instantly die, is for a large amount of water, or a flood, to cover and kill the creature. The flood moves the sediment into the right place and kills the animal. Therefore, this is one reason the flood was real. Fossilization is a fact, and science should not be doubted, so with this reason alone, it’s almost enough to prove the flood is reality. Additionally, the shape of the fossils and the way the animal looks when fossilized is very important, but the fact alone that there are fossils proves there was a flood, “Fossils don’t form on lake bottoms today,  nor are they found  forming on the bottom of the sea. Instead, they normally only form when a plant or animal is buried soon after it dies. Therefore, the fossils themselves are evidence of a catastrophe such as a  flood…” (Scientific Evidence for a Worldwide Flood - Earth Age). Fossils won’t form in completely normal conditions, meaning something crazy, even unrealistic has to happen. The animal or plant must be rapidly buried by sediment or dirt, and a flood would be perfect for those conditions to be met. Scientific facts prove that a fossil needs extreme conditions to form, and a flood would be the perfect example of that. Many fossils have been found, and these can all be used to prove the fact that this flood actually happened. Fossils are a great piece of geological evidence that proves the flood in Genesis was real. Many fossils found have been formed in unrealistic conditions, and definitely show strong scientific evidence of a supernatural worldwide flood. Fossils are a great way to prove this flood was real.

Although fossils are great, another way to ensure the reality of this flood is trusted is to look at the sediment layers and locations. First of all, the article titled “No Slow and Gradual Erosion” by found on the website answers in Genesis describes how the same grains of sediment and rock were found at the Grand Canyon and Coconino Sandstone, meaning that the same pieces of rock were found in two different places, (Snelling). Sediment can not exist without some form of erosion, which means a rock being broken down by forces of nature, such as wind, water or on occasion, ice. Since sediment is typically created by storms or strong winds, a flood would definitely create sediment, and lots of it. However, just a regular flood would not move the sediment that far, therefore, a large amount of water is needed to transport all this sediment to a different place entirely. Sediment being found in two places at once is a huge clue pointing towards the fact that the flood in Genesis was real, since a lot of water is necessary to transport large amounts of sediment for a long distance. Additionally, sediment or rock formations can provide even more evidence of the flood.
