Argumentative Essay Sample: Why Cancel Culture Is Bad

Cancel culture is really not necessary in today’s modern society because of how extreme it goes. But…what is cancel-culture? Well, Cancel culture is the act of ganging up on a person online and trying to use anything against them to ruin their life. And this can be because of anything this person has done to ‘deserve’ such ‘punishment’.  This can be due to anything. Sometimes the anger from people is justified and what the person has done was really bad. But OTHER (and most) times, It's really old and holds no value. Like a joke from 10 years ago or something dumb thing, they did a long time ago. Stuff those people have either moved on from or learned from and stop doing it. But these people (the people who are a part of cancel-culture) will still attack regardless. While some argue that cancel culture is good and helpful because certain people deserve it and that's how they get what they want, In my opinion, cancel culture is pretty bad and is a really toxic culture in today's media and society altogether.

For one, a good number of people targeted are targeted for very small and unproblematic reasons that have no real room for concern. Things like old jokes, old tweets from Twitter or old messages from years ago, or sometimes even current. The current ones can be justified cause they are recent but as I have stated before; You can do better than to just bully them off the internet. Sometimes the people who didn’t learn from the past and keep messing up really hard are the ones who deserved to be canceled. Or at least reflect on their past actions. Bullying is never justified, (It really depends on the situation Which I’ll discuss later) but for the most part, No.  All this shows is that there are battery ways to speak your mind about controversies than to attempt to ruin someone's life over it. But why else would cancel-culture be…bad? If there's more than just the petty reasons.

People go way too far. Like, insanely far with what they do to get back at these people. Good examples of these are people getting attacked for stuff from the past…But then they’ll lose their jobs because of the backlash and sometimes people would even be doxxed and harassed (Doxxing means someone who leaks someone's private information like house address and things like that). An example of this occurring was when Movie Director James Gunn got backlash for decade-old tweets of really bad jokes but once cancel-culture came the backlash was so heavy that Disney caught wind, couldn’t handle it, and basically fired him. Until they hired him back later.  And when it comes to harassment people will go far. Which also leads to doxxing. That has happened to people famous or not famous. Especially all over other platforms like Discord or Reddit. Both Social media platforms. All of the damage that cancel-culture is leaving behind pretty much proves how unnecessary it is to have it in modern-day society. We as people living in the modern age should know better than to just throw someone's life away without thinking twice with a harsh sense of mob mentality (this also depends on the person in question but I will get to that in just a second). There are better ways to give concern than to harass them. But…what about those who really deserve it?

Every once in a while there does appear to be someone who deserves to be canceled. And the backlash is justified. In an article written by journalist, Jade Ellis, she ponders the question: ‘What's the big deal about cancel-culture?’. In the article, she explains that in modern-day society it's necessary to have a cancel-culture since it calls about people who deserve it. This is justified but she doesn’t mention those who were unjustifiably wronged by cancel-culture. People like Harvey Weinstein, Ellen DeGeneres, and so on all deserve to be called out for their reckless actions. Yes, I do agree that those people deserved to be ‘canceled’. And especially a lot more who have done really scummy things and have gotten away with it. And sure, We wouldn't have marriage equality without Cancel-culture. But besides just getting what you want in the end as a member of cancel-culture, Until then it's mob mentality. It spreads a lot of hate to people who still don't deserve it.So can cancel culture still be necessary? I still think even then, no. There are better ways to get your concern out there. It's best to keep your aggressive emotions trained and keep them at a minimum than to lash out at others.

People have argued that cancel-culture is helpful because sometimes people deserve it and it's how they get what they want. In my opinion, cancel-culture is pretty bad and is a really toxic culture in today's media and society altogether. So looking at what’s been stated, Does cancel culture really look as good as people say it is? Causing destruction and harassing people who sometimes don’t deserve it. Or sometimes they do. Sometimes it really does depend on the situation. But most of the time the situation isn’t worth coming back to which was one of the main points highlighted in the essay. Next time you see anyone ‘getting canceled’, You have to really think logically about all sides of the story and just ask yourself…Is it really worth ruining their lives? Is harassing them and wanting them to die really gonna help those on the other side or is the person even innocent? That’s only up for you to decide.
