Argumentative Essay: Three Month Summer Break Provides More Benefits
Once the bell rings, excited faces brighten the hallway as students leave the classroom and enter the first day of summer break. As summer break nears, students feel alleviated from the pressure that has been on them the past nine months. Some people may argue that having longer additional breaks throughout the school year with a one month summer break is more beneficial than the three months students currently have off. Undoubtedly, the three month summer break may cause problems for students, however, opportunities may also arise.
To begin, some people may fear that students encounter problems once school starts. If a student shows signs that they are struggling to retain previous knowledge, they may be put into summer school. Summer school is a way for students to stay fluent in their schooling, however, it is not always enjoyable. With the modified summer break, summer school may not be necessary, for the longest break throughout the year will only be one month. Moreover, throughout the school year countless students struggle with their mental health. Because there are not a great deal of breaks throughout the normal year, students become overwhelmed with classes easily, but with multiple week breaks students will have the chance to catch up on homework. Students that are not worried about school appear to be much happier than those drowning in a pile of work. Therefore, students getting breaks during the year may help relieve any stress. Furthermore, many students look forward to coming to school. For numerous students, school is the only place they are able to see their friends. Oftentimes life at home can be rough, and students have learned to escape that at school. By extending the school year, students are able to relieve their minds from any complications at home. In brief, students will have the chance to experience different opportunities to learn with this modified summer break.
Nevertheless, a longer summer break creates more opportunities for students. First, many students attend camps throughout the summer. Some participate in academic camps such as medicine, science, space, and technology camps, while others are at sports camps or working as a camp counselor. These camps provide students with skills that they wouldn’t learn in the classroom. Along with that, high school students also need to start making money. Many students work all summer to start saving for college. High schoolers are essential in most cities because certain seasonal businesses only hire students. Without the high school students having a long summer break, businesses would struggle to stay staffed. Also, as a result of this long summer break, students and teachers are happier. Once the school year comes to an end everyone is mentally drained and looking forward to their three month break, taking that away would not be beneficial for anyone. Students and teachers need the well deserved break to recover from the mental strain caused by the school year. One week a few times a year will not be the magic cure to the ongoing stress. All in all, students need this long break for the opportunities it brings.
Even though a normal summer break may cause problems for students, it can also create opportunities. Students will have the chance to retain additional knowledge that they may not have been given the chance to grasp in a school setting. So, keeping a three month summer break proves to have more benefits for students.
