Role-Models: Most of us have at least one person that we look up to or feel inspired by. Maybe our parents, friends, celebrities or even influencers. Having such a person can be inspiring or helpful, however some role-models “abuse” their influence, by doing things such as drunk driving or being rude to others. Because of that, it is very important to choose your role-models wisely and not just at random. In the following paragraphs I will discuss the positives, as well as the negatives about having or being a role-model.

First of all, a positive thing about having a role-model, is that they can inspire and motivate you to work hard, so that you can achieve your goals. As example: If you have a good friend, who got into your dream college, you will probably ask them for tips on how to get accepted by the college. They inspire you to work harder on yourself, so that you can achieve your dreams as well.

However, sometimes looking up to your role-model and comparing yourself to them, can be very damaging to your mental health and overall well-being. Influencers are a good example of that. With the help of retouching-apps, they alter their images a lot, which leads to them creating unrealistic beauty-standards (being very toned, skinny, having perfect skin…). They also only share the positive moments of their life, which makes it look like they’re living the perfect life. People – especially young children and teens – get influenced by the “fake reality” and start to get unhappy with themselves and their lives. This can lead to them developing eating disorders or even depression.

Secondly, role-models can also influence and inspire you to living a healthier and more balanced life. They can show you how to cook quick and easy – but at the same time healthy – meals, introduce you to new sports or they can just motivate you to move more and be healthier overall. Role-models can also help you with having a healthy mindset, as example: sharing positive quotes or articles that teach about mindfulness.

On the other side, not every role-model will influence you to living a healthier life. If you see the person that you aspire to be, smoking or drinking, you will probably consider doing these things as well. This can lead to you adopting unhealthy – and sometimes even life-threatening – habits.

Lastly, role-models can be a great example on how to treat others with respect. If you see a person your age helping someone else with the groceries, you will probably consider doing the same thing next time as well. This will not only make you feel better, but it is also something that everyone can benefit from.

In contrast, some people (influencers, as well as role-models) do illegal things or start dangerous trends that can seriously harm other people. An example of that would be the “ice-cream-lick” trend, which started in 2019. Influencers thought that it would be funny to go into a supermarket, take an ice-cream-tub, open it and lick the ice-cream. After that they would close the container again and put it back into the fridge. After a few of these videos went viral, more and more people (especially teens) decided to participate in this unhygienic and dangerous trend, just because they saw their idols doing it.

These are only a few arguments that show the positive and negative influences that role-models can have on people. Because of that, I believe that it is very important to choose your idol wisely, just to make sure that you’re not being influenced in the wrong way.
