Argumetative Essay: High School Students Shouldn’t Be Allowed to Use Social Media

Some people argue that high school students should be allowed to use social media. Social media is an internet-based network that gives users quick electronic communication of content. High school students shouldn’t be allowed to use social media; Even so, there are people who believe that high school students should be allowed to use social media. There are plenty of reasons that support this argument. 

One reason high school students shouldn’t be allowed to use social media is because, “…’fake news’ is retweeted more often than true news” (Text 2, lines 3-5). This fact shows that false information can be spread quickly to them and by the students. If you perceive something repeatedly, it will stick. Text 2 says, “…three months prior to the 2016 US presidential election, false news stories about the two candidates were shared a total of 37.6 million times on Facebook” (Text 2, lines 6-7). This proves that false information, being unknowingly false, can be spread like wildfire by young and naive teens. 

Another reason high school students shouldn’t be allowed to use social media is because of the way it can corrupt the mind. You may have seen something about yourself on social media and became upset since it wasn’t true. Some teens have had this happen to them numerous times and so they decide to end their lives. Text 4 states, “. . . children who are victims of cyberbullying are almost twice as likely to attempt suicide” (Text 4, lines 7-8). This shows that people should be careful of what they say or do on social media because while it may not affect them it may affect someone else. Another piece of evidence shows how teenagers aren’t the only ones impacted by cyberbullying on social media Text 4 shows this when it states, “Adults can also be victims of cyberbullying, with social, familial, or workplace aggression being displayed on social media” (Text 4, lines 8-9). The text proves that not only can teens be bullied online but also that adults can too. 

To summarize this essay high school students shouldn’t be allowed to use social media, there are those who think that high school students should be allowed to use social media. They argue, “Social media sites are one of the top news sources for 46% of Americans. . .” (Text 1, lines 3-5). Though the facts are there occasionally “fake” news spreads instead. Remember social media can lie to people the way people can lie to each other. High school students should not be allowed to use social media. 

In conclusion, there are still some that believe that high school students should be allowed to use social media, they should not be allowed to use social media. And there are many reasons and much evidence that proves this claim. For example, reasons 1 & 2 in the 2nd paragraph from Text 2 where it talks about “fake” news and the election. Therefore, high school students shouldn’t be allowed to use social media. Furthermore, this is the end of my argument essay.
