In The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini Baba was previously known as a man of heroics, and could do only heroic things. In this passage Baba’s heroic figure is not only being exposed, it is also being ruined. There are many details in the passage that contain not so heroic actions by Baba. When they were in Afghanistan Baba was always known as the heroic figure, always doing something for the poor, building orphanages, and even, treating everyone with respect. He was looked at as a man who could do nothing wrong but he is more like the complete opposite when he moves to America.  Baba’s heroic figure when he moves to America is not only being exposed but it is also being ruined.

Since the move to America Baba has acted differently and really had a different mindset on what he should do with his life. Since he moved to America he is not nearly as wealthy as he was in Afghanistan. He has no drive or determination in America to do anything, on the other hand, in Afghanistan he was building orphanages for kids. “Maybe I’ll spell ‘cat’ and the teacher will give me a glittery little star so I can run home and show it off to you,’ he’d grumble” (Hosseini). This shows that he has no drive or motive to do anything because it requires too much work for him. He has no drive to do anything, not even the simplest of tasks like learning the alphabet. He isn’t willing to try to learn new things or build back a life for himself in America. If he did try, maybe he could have a better life with more food and not needing to work as much as he does.

If Baba had really strived to build himself a good life in America after he had moved there he could have better circumstances with his basic living needs. Baba had been working at a gas station to try to put money on the table. When he had the day off he was going to buy something from the store across from where he works. “I watched him jaywalk across Fremont Boulevard and enter Fast&Easy, a little grocery store run by an elderly Vietnamese couple, Mr. and Mrs. Nguyen” (Hosseini). This shows that he is breaking the law and not taking the rules seriously in America. While in Afghanistan he could do a lot of things he couldn’t do in America because he had no money.  He could easily be fined or even possibly arrested if the cops saw him jaywalking and that could totally reset his money that he earned from his job. Baba tries to do good and make money but he also has trouble following the rules.

Baba has a lack of common sense to follow the rules when he moves to America because life is so different for him. When he tried to buy oranges from the grocery store he was walking to earlier he was denied and asked for an ID. “He wants to see my license, Baba bellowed in Farsi. Almost two years we’ve bought his damn fruits  and put money in his pocket and the son of a dog wants to see my license!” (Hosseini). This quote shows that Baba can lose control easily even if it is just over a couple of oranges. He is like a shadow of the man in the heroism act that he was in Afghanistan. Baba had broken some glass on the desk because he went mad and this shows that he has a lack of control when he is angry. This would never be the act of Baba if he was in Afghanistan.

In The Kite Runner by Khaled Hossieni Baba goes from being a man of heroics to a man of anger. He expresses his anger through his physical actions which is never a good thing to do. In this passage it expresses the many times Baba has done something not heroic and really shows how he has changed over the past couple of years he made the change from Afghanistan to America. He has a hard time adjusting to the rules in Afghanistan and his behavior shows that. Now Baba has decreased as a hero in not only the reader’s eyes but also in Amir’s eyes. Amir has seen what Baba has turned into just from the grocery store example. Baba’s heroic figure in The Kite Runner, is not only being exposed but it is also being ruined.
