There have been stories of heroes for centuries who have had many great attributes, but which is more important, the ability of winning or the action of taking a stand? The ability of a hero that is the most  important to have is the act of  taking a stand. This characteristic or ability is important for many reasons including, that a hero's legacy lasts longer, heroes in literature such as Beowulf took a stand and is  remembered, and winning is not the only thing that a hero is defined by.

The first reason why taking a stand is more important for a hero is that their legacies live on longer. For example, comic book heroes such as Batman, Superman, Spiderman, and The Avengers have all taken a stand against many threats and won but these comic book hero’s legacies have lived on because of the stories that are told about them taking a stand against evil. A real world example of this is when Captain Sully saved those people on the plane from crashing. Even though he did that out of instinct his legacy lives on because he took a stand or initiative and saved all the passengers. This is the first reason why the trait of taking a stand is more important for a hero.

The second reason why taking a stand is more important for a hero is that people will remember what the hero has done. For example, the first ever hero portrayed in literature Beowulf, he took a stand against three violent monsters and in the end lost, but he took a stand when others in the story did not have the courage to. A real world example of this is This is the second reason why taking a stand is more important for a hero.

The final reason why taking a stand is more important for a hero is that heroes are not defined by winning. For example, in the story, “The Coming of Beowulf”, Beowulf has to take a stand against the dragon, he ultimately loses, but he also  gets rid of the beast as well. Another example is that in “ The Coming of Beowulf”, Beowulf takes a stand against Grendel even though nobody believes he can defeat the monster, Beowulf believes he has to try. . This is the final reason why taking a stand is more important for a hero.

Others might say winning is more important for a hero because a hero may take a stand but lose. An example of this is in “ The Coming of Beowulf”,   when Beowulf takes the stand against the dragon and loses, some might consider this as Beowulf failing to be a hero. However, my position that heroes should take a stand is stronger than the position that a hero is  defined by winning is that the aspect of a hero is not defined by winning or losing, it is defined by the willingness to take a stand.
