Bravery Theme in Private Peaceful Essay Example

Change as a result of developing bravery, becoming more loving, and caring about his family, are some of the main themes explored throughout Michael Morpurgo’s Private peaceful. This novel centres around the protagonist, Thomas 'Tommo' Peaceful – Tommo is the narrator. As he narrates, he is an underage soldier, fighting in France in WWI. He is scared and he looks back on his earlier childhood memories, believing that he caused his fathers death. He was an affectionate lion going through his life. His brother was also like a dolphin, guiding and protecting his younger brother. He becomes much more vigorous going throughout the story. He faced a lot of endurance, but he acted like his own father, was courageous, and saved many lives. As a result of private peaceful and tribulations, Tommo has faced the main themes were being brave, having love, and caring for his family.

Bravery is a foremost theme because the focal character, Thomas (Tommo) Shows this topic all around this story. Being a brave lion can help you overcome any problems in your life. This is seen throughout the novel “private peaceful”. Like when Tommo on page 106, He and his one-year older brother Charlie were transmitted to war. Charlie was forced to go to battle, but Tommo on the other hand, wanted to join the war, yet he wasn’t old enough, so he lied to go in. “you’ve got to be seventeen” said Charlie” but Tommo was sixteen, Charlie continued on, “They won’t let you join unless you are”. And this shows that Tommo was not allowed to go to war but still was “brave” and went to it, risking his life. This helps to convey the author’s message that sometimes being brave can help you overcome problems.  

The other theme to consider is love. Becoming more loving is a key theme in this book. It shows throughout the story that loving each other can help you have a big heart. In the book, Tommo’s Autistic oldest brother, Big Joe, had lost his most loved dog, Bertha. You can see love in this part of the story because big joe had loved Bertha so much that he went lost, everyone thought that he had killed himself because he had lost both of his lion’s share of loved things like his well-loved father and of course bertha. “Well, I think he’d want to be wherever Bertha is. So, he’d want to be in Heaven, wouldn’t he?”. The peaceful family searching for big joe means that everyone loves him no matter who he is. Concluding that he links to a substantial theme, becoming more loving can help you have a great heart.

In the novel, Private Peaceful Tommo’s correspondence with his family is outstanding as it helps him overcome some difficulties he has faced in the company of his family’s support. This is seen when Charlie “steals” the elderly dog that the Colonel was about to slaughter. Even though the Colonel has the power to evict her from her home, Mrs peaceful stands up for her son, coolly paying the Colonel for the dog, claiming that if it’s been paid for, it’s not stolen. “Sixpence. I’m buying the dog off you for sixpence, not a bad price for a useless dog. So now it’s not stolen, is it?” the subject shows that Mrs. peaceful was sticking up for “family” and the outcome was a win. This shows that the Author is trying to convey the message, that when you do things for your family, family will stick up for you or succour we you need it.

Tommo changes as an outcome of his life. He develops bravery, he becomes more loving, and cares about his family. Michael Morpurgo has shown in this book that there are struggles in life and you must overcome them, and Tommo develops from these themes. Tommo becomes a lot more mature in his way of thinking and his decisions, and he became more resilient when facing hardships and troubles with these themes. Consequently, the protagonist, Thomas peaceful, reflects the Author’s message that being a brave lion, loving like a mother to her children, and being devoted with your family are a must have, in order to love your life.
