The everyday a philosophy topic that doesn’t only hold a special meaning in different individuals heart, but also an artwork that individuals get to experience everyday. The everyday doesn’t just mean happy music, artwork, or television shows that a person watches/ looks at everyday. Rather the everyday as defined by Bruno Munari (27) “When the objects we use every day and the surroundings we lie in have become in themselves a work of art, then we shall be able to say that we have achieved a balanced life”. To simplify this definition by Bruno Munari. This definition means that when items not only the ones that we use everyday, but also items that we surround ourselves with. When we view them as artwork then our life is completed. That is the definition of the everyday. In this paper not only will I show why the everyday isn’t a broad topic. I will also show why the everyday holds a special meaning to not only people’s life, but as well as some cultures. Even though some people may argue that the everyday is a very broad topic in art philosophy, it is not, since the everyday might be considered a different meaning to different individuals.

​The everyday, not only has a very narrow meaning but it also holds important meaning to different individuals. The everyday not only emphasizes on the fact that anything can be considered as artwork, which is truly beautiful. It also shows that modern items are pieces of art. These artworks can range from drawings, pictures, food, to music and so on. The everyday could be any range of items as long as it fits into two criteria’s. One criteria is that it is something that is seen or heard in an individual’s everyday life. The second criteria is that it holds a sentimental meaning to that individuals life. Lastly, as stated by Monica B. Pearl “I have said this book is about structure, about form, and about genre; it is also about feelings. Which are also structured, also formed. And also have an originally existence.”. This means that items that are part of the everyday theory also brings some short of feeling to that individual.

Now examples of how each category fits underneath the everyday. An example of a drawing being part of the everyday is a parent looking at their child’s artwork that is hung up on the refrigerator everyday. This example fits into the two criteria’s, since not only is this parent looking at their child’s artwork everyday but this artwork also holds a sentimental meaning to the parents, since this drawing is something that their child has drawn. A picture is also part of the everyday, since for example a person looks at the picture of them and a dead relative everyday. This goes into the two criteria’s, since not only is the person looking at the picture everyday. The picture also holds a huge meaning to this person, since it reminds them of someone that they knew and love that has sadly passed away. Now an example of how a piece of food can also fit into the criteria of the everyday is for an example a rich person puts a piece of edible gold into their cereal each morning. Now someone might be confused on how this is related to the everyday I will break down why it fits. First this individual is putting a piece of edible gold into their cereal each morning, which means that this individual is doing this everyday which fits into the first criteria. Now how this scenario could fit into the second criteria is if this piece of gold as well as this specific cereal reminds the person that once was poor that the hardship is over then it could fit into the second criteria. Another way it could fit into the second criteria is if one of the individuals relative made him this meal everyday until they passed away and this meal reminds the person of the individual that has passed away. Even though the food category could be a little tricky it still fits within the everyday. Lastly, an example of how music is part of the everyday is an individual listens to the song My Love by Inez everyday, to remind the individual about their family members that live far away from this person. This fits into the first category, since the individual listens to the song everyday and it also fits into the second category, since it has a sentimental meaning to this individual, since it reminds them of their family that lives far away from this individual. Now after mentioning these categories as well as examples of them I hope that you understand that even with these different categories individuals usually have only one or two categories that they use as part of their everyday.

​In some cultures the everyday is being used as something that identify if that individual is part of that culture or religion. For example in Japanese culture it is important that individuals drink tea everyday. This is linked to the everyday theory, since not only do people from Japanese culture drink tea everyday, it is also sentimental since it is part of who they are as a Japanese individual. Not only are the  Japanese individuals in this example are following their culture, but they are unknowingly following the everyday theory. Another example of this is in the Sudanese culture as well as other African and Middle eastern culture it is customary for individuals to eat in one big plate using their hands. Now not only do these individual follow this everyday, but it also is sentimental to them since it is believed that eating together in one huge plate is the equivalent of the individual getting to know each other closer. This is not only showing how the everyday theory is a part of an individual’s everyday life, but it also shows how the everyday theory can be a huge part of one’s identity.

Lastly, another example of the everyday theory is in religions. In some religions there are religious rituals that are completed everyday. This means that not only does the religion follow the everyday theory, but the individuals in those religions are also completing a ritual that I part of their identity. An example of this being is when Christians say a prayer before every meal that they are about to consume. Now not only do Christians do this everyday, but it also have a very important meaning behind it. Which classifies this as being part of the everyday. Now although some individuals can argue and say that it isn’t classified as art. Art doesn’t have to be one single item as a drawing it can range to a religious ritual as well.

To conclude, not only does these examples show how the everyday theory is not a broad topic in fact it is very narrow. It also shows how an individuals identity is also part of the everyday. I have talked about the different criteria’s that need to be met in order for an item to be considered part of the everyday. Even though there are many categories that are a part of the everyday and the fact that the everyday means different items for different individuals. The everyday is still a very narrow topic. As stated in the beginning by, Bruno Munari (27) “When the objects we use every day and the surroundings we lie in have become in themselves a work of art, then we shall be able to say that we have achieved a balanced life”. This is the true meaning behind the everyday theory. My final remarks are that even though the everyday theory can have multiple topics, it is very narrow since to most individuals it only means one thing to them.
