Suicide has become the third leading cause of death in the world. It takes time for the whole process to begin. The time someone chooses to end their life, the time the person has to spend with somebody, and in the aftermath, the time it’ll take for the people who cared to heal. Suicide is defined as a self-inflicted death. Whether it has been caused by burnout, a mental illness, or a wave of pressure, depression is sought to be the main culprit of this calamity, and it is very common to be caught during the start of teenage years.

Depression can lead to a desire to die.  It can be classified into many groups including Major Depression, Bipolar disorder, Seasonal Affective Disorder, Persistent Depressive Disorder, and many more. Major or Clinical depression is very common amongst young teens. It is a persistent feeling of hopelessness and despair. Depression can cause many problems including insomnia, a weak body image, a lack of interest, etc. In a study made by the National Institute of Education in Singapore, among high school students, depression was found to be the root of suicidal behaviors. Students who had higher scores on depression were substantially likely to commit suicide. It can be hard to identify somebody who is having trouble with their mental health so many times after someones’ attempt, the surrounding people would not have even noticed that they were struggling. Although not every depressed person ends their life, when depression increases, this is when a suicide attempt is more likely to happen.

Many times during depression there are emotional impulses. Impulsive thoughts are unwanted thoughts that can pop up at any time. When someone is pushed to their limits, it’s like being torn apart into pieces. An event of misfortune can result in harming one’s pride and can deeply scar someone. To cope with those problems, a person may try to use a substance like alcohol to get soaked into the calming effect. Under the influence, impulsive thoughts can appear and can lead to impulsive actions. Impulsive actions fail to comply with control and decision-making. According to statistics, 64.0% of attempts were reported to be impulsive while a minority of 13.8% reported having a definite plan for suicide. Certain behaviors and thoughts can lead to unplanned suicide. It is normal for a person to have some impulsive thoughts, but when it is recurring, that is when it becomes a problem. It can ruin a life.

Lastly, not only can depression be caused by academics or a lost loved one, but it can also be traced to a person’s race, gender, sexuality, social class, religion, and most of all, past abuse.  79 individual studies have stated that younger individuals who have experienced any traumatic event were not under the care of clinicians and had higher rates of suicide attempts. After growing up with that lingering pain, there could be a development of low-self esteem which can completely change a victim. It leaves the person feeling weak and used. Elizabeth Griffin, MD, in her article “What Depression Does To Our Minds When It Attacks,” can perfectly describe the impact it has by saying “it is overwhelming and overpowering, and it crushes its prey.” As a result, those with PTSD and depression can have different coping skills, such as not expressing feelings or thoughts which makes it harder for them to get help. In short, certain characteristics and past experiences can make a person vulnerable to suicide.

In conclusion, a link between depression and other risk factors can lead to suicide. Impulses, experiences, and comorbid disorders in depression can also be the cause. By being insightful and learning about these factors, it can be helpful to identify those who are prone to ending their lives and can help contribute to suicide prevention.
