Causes and Consequences of Brexit Essay Example

The relationship between the UK and the EU has been difficult, over the last couple of years there’s been a discussion on whether the United Kingdom should remain a part of the European Union or not. On June 23, 2016, the UK held a referendum that decided that the UK would leave the EU.

There are many different factors on why the UK decided to leave the EU. For instance, back in the 2000s the EU expanded and included post-communist countries, and people in those countries were poorer. Numerous of their citizens immigrated to wealthier countries for instance the United Kingdom. Later in 2008 when the stock market crashed it especially hit some European countries more than others. When people from those countries could not find a job anymore. Their citizens went to find jobs in other countries in the EU included the UK. This was another reason for more immigration in the UK.

Although the UK decided to leave the EU not everyone was agreeing with the decision. Scotland for example had voted to remain in the EU and so did Northern Ireland. England and Wales voted to leave the EU. Overall, the whole UK had 51,9% to leave and 48,1% to remain. While the whole UK has left the EU, Scotland still has its greatest interest to continue to work together with the EU because of their benefits of their partnership. Scotland really wanted to remain in the EU, where their prime minister thought it was in Scotland’s biggest inters. In 2020 the UK government and the EU had reached an agreement on their new partnership

The situation after Brexit effected both parts. The UK immediately had an impact on their economy. Where their economy has slowed, and many of the businesses in the UK has changed their headquarters to the EU. One of the biggest disadvantages with the Brexit situation is its damage to the UKs economy growth. The Brexit situation also effected Britain’s young workers where Germany may have more than three million jobs available by 2030, but those jobs would not be as easily available now after Brexit. This also effected EU by losing one-sixth of its economic power and a bigger share of its foreign and security policy. The departure of the UK is also a big loss in itself because of their considerable global influence.

In conclusion this whole situation has been exciting because of its influence on Europe. There are different reasons on why they decided to leave the EU. One of the main reasons were immigration that drove the UK to the decision on leaving the EU. The whole UK was divided on this decision to either remain or leave. Its was a big difference between the countries. Where Scotland and Northern Ireland wanted to remain and England and Wales to leave. Quick after the decision on leaving the EU, the consequences of the decision came falling on both parts.
