Challenges Facing Men in Today's Society Essay Example

A male faces more challenges in his youth than females. Females face many challenges just by being female, but most individuals talk about that, and their problems are very mainstream. Whereas the challenges that male faces, none of them are mainstream to where he can get help or not be judged for talking about how he feels. There are a variety of factors that play into this statement, like the unfair job and schooling opportunities, the unfair court system, and society not being accepting of males’ trauma and well-being. Those are only a few of the challenges males face, that no one talks about or sees. 

There are unfair job and schooling opportunities that go in females’ favor over males. For example, females have scholarships specifically designed for them and have even been picked over males for certain scholarships simply because they are female. This is backed up by the study of 37.1 percent of females holding at least a bachelor’s degree compared to 34.9 percent of males (DOL 2011. “Women’s Employment During the Recovery”, Washington, D.C). This shows not as many males go to or even finish college, not having those scholarships hinders the chances of males with less money, going to college or completing it. Furthermore, females are 50 percent more likely to work in the public sector than males, most being health and social services along with education services. Companies with 25% or more women in leadership positions as Corporate Officers averaged 13 times more philanthropic donations than those with none, proving companies would favor females over males. Granted you could bring up that 69.2 percent of labor jobs are males and that is a very good point but that means a male has more physically and possibly mentally demanding jobs after working long, hard hours at work.

Society is not accepting of males’ emotional trauma and well-being like they are of females. The suicide rate is four times higher for males than females. In the United States, male deaths make up almost 80% of all suicide deaths (Holmes, 2021, as cited in Rates and Statistics for Suicide in the United States, 2021). In theory, this proves that males are dealing with so much stuff mentally but don’t seek help due to society making up the stereotype that males do not have problems and can deal with anything. Even me being a male has experienced a female telling me I cannot be sad simply because I am a male and “males do not get sad and show weakness” and this has happened on more than one occasion. Although suicide is attempted three times as often by females; women are also more likely to have suicidal thoughts. Now, this is most likely going to mean that females have mental problems but are more, likely to seek help as it is normal for a female to seek help for her problems.  Most people will say that society is becoming much more accepting of males’ problems now, but it is still a very overlooked topic.

The Criminal Justice System is in favor of young adult females over young adult males. As proof, in Utah males, are awarded only 26 percent of custody time with their kids and females receive 74 percent (Pedrazas, 2021, as cited in National Child Custody Statistics By Gender, 2021).  Meaning that when in child court cases, the female is more likely to win over the male, even if the male is better off financially and more qualified to take care of the child. In addition to those statistics, in criminal court, females are 58 percent less likely to be sentenced to prison. Even if someone takes sentencing out of the equation, they still have so many other factors that the Justice System is in favor of females over males. Females are more likely than males to be granted lenient pretrial release terms, to receive lower bail amounts when bail was set, to spend shorter periods in jail before trial, and to gain release pending trial. Someone could bring in the argument that more males get arrested than females, which is true but that leaves more of an error for more males to get falsely accused of crimes they did not commit. Not saying that accounts for all of the male arrests but a person certainly hears about males getting falsely accused of crime way more often than you do females. 

I am not saying young adult females, do not have it hard, I am simply saying young adult males have harder for reasons no one sees. Females have various hurdles simply because they are female, but most people talk about it, and their problems are extremely common. Males encounter a variety of issues, none of which are mainstream enough for them to seek aid or be condemned for expressing their feelings. Several variables contribute to this assertion, including unequal career and educational prospects, an unjust legal system, and society's lack of acceptance of male trauma and well-being. These are just a handful of the issues that no one talks about or notices when it comes to males.
