Mahatma Gandhi once said, “Earth provides enough to satisfy every mans need, but not every mans greed.” This quote relates to the story because greed does not satisfy Madam Loisel and by this, greed gets the best of her. In “The Necklace,” Madam Loisel’s need for admiration and her dishonesty led to her downfall.

Madam Loisel desires more in her life than what she has; she felt as if her life was made for the better. For example, she cries every time she went to see her wealthy friend, because she has better things than what she has. This shows that she feels as if not having anything made her less of a human being. Madam Loisel is envious of her friend and needs the think she is like her to feel as if she is equal to her. In addition, she is embarrassed of her plain coat, so she left the party early so no one could see her wearing it. Without fancy items, others would not treat her the same in her mind. Madam Loisel needs to make a good appearance at the party so others can think she is like one of them. With this, Madam Loisel should have taken a step back to realize that her friend and others would not judge her from the outside rather from inside.

As a result of dishonesty made by Madam Loisel lies it causes her 10 years of drudgery. For instance, she wears an expensive dress and what she thinks is a real diamond necklace to the party. With this, she does not really think about if it is real or not because, and since her friend is rich, she thinks to herself why she would have something fake. Just because a person might seem to have money does not mean everything, they obtain is going to be always truly real. Lastly, she did not tell her friend that she had lost the necklace; instead, she told her the clasp broke. By doing so, her lie made her feel less of a person and ashamed of the way she acted. She kept the lie going but deep down she felt how awful of a friend she was in doing her lying, she needed to stay away from her so she could feel better about the situation. If only Madam Loisel just told her friend about losing the necklace she would not have had to pay off the necklaces price even when it was fake, she caused needless extra work on herself by doing so.

In conclusion Madam Loisel needs to own up to her wrong doings. Appearance is too valuable to her than the love and support from her friends around her. We all need to take a step back and realize that appearance and money does not buy true happiness. But in turn, it causes more issues we all must stay truthful to our lives and the lives of others and by doing this, it would leave this world with none of the unnecessary suffering present in our lives.
