Democracy and dictatorship are two different types of government. In a democracy, people have the power to vote, whereas in a dictatorship only the leader has power. This essay will show two significant differences between a democracy and dictatorship. In a democracy, people can contribute and their voice is counted. This does not happen in a dictatorship.

Human rights are a non-issue in a dictatorship, however, in a democracy all basic human rights are valued. Two human rights that are violated in a dictatorship are the power to vote and freedom of expression. No one has the ability to vote while in a dictatorship because the only person with power is the dictator themselves. If you take a look back to the 1930s, when Germany was governed by Hitler you will see that almost all human rights weren’t existent. Murder, enslavement and anti-semitism were just some of the human rights Hitler violated. Being Jewish back in 1935, you would not have had a good life. Many laws were implemented against any Jewish people making them lose passports, jobs and even having to wear the Star of David so people would know they were Jewish. Thankfully, we live in New Zealand which has always had a fair democratic government. People have the power to vote and are freely allowed to speak whether they support the  government's ideas or not. In New Zealand we have a representative democracy, meaning the leader of the party which gets the most votes becomes prime minister. During New Zealand's previous elections two referendums were held: the end of life and cannabis legislation referenda. These were made so the public could choose if laws were to be put in place. Having this kind of freedom really adds to the public's satisfaction. These examples show significant differences between the two governments.

A democratic government has people in power, meaning the public is involved and included. However, in a dictatorship one person has authority over everyone and everything. In the 1930s while Hitler was governing, he was able to create laws that killed more than forty million people. He was then appointed chancellor of Germany in 1933 which then granted him more power. After the death of Paul von Hindenburg in August 1934, Hitler was made chancellor and president of Germany. This is when Hitler obtained the title Führer. In New Zealand there is a democracy so power is distributed equally. Our elections are held every three years, allowing people to vote for who they want as a leader.  Ultimately the prime minister makes the final decision, but people’s wants and needs are taken into account.

In summary, this essay has explained the significant differences between a democratic and dictatorial system. People feel more free and happy in a democracy since they can contribute and their voice is counted. Living in a country with a democracy, it’s important to understand what that means for us. These are the reasons that show how a democracy and dictatorship are so significantly different.
