Movies are one of the biggest learning tools that teachers use when teaching a subject. The teacher will allow the students to watch a movie after reading a book of the story. Beowulf has been told for over one thousand years, it is one of the most important old English literature works. Beowulf is a poem and also has a written movie, and both have different ways it is taught. Movies are a much better way to understand books/poems because, They allow better knowledge of the story, Visual learning is better to engage the learner, and give more of an open mind to the student.

Knowledge of one subject is the main priority of learning. “The poem’s origins lay in oral story-telling or singing for an unlettered audience and would have probably been told over several nights of feasting” (Rees). Several nights to be told one story? Watching the movie could be learned in just under two hours, and wouldn’t be as time consuming. One might say “the poem is more correct than the movie” which would be incorrect, as the poem has changed many times throughout its lifetime.

Visual learning is one of the easiest ways to learn and get a better understanding of a story. “This movie has to be seen in 3D to be believed – it is quite simply breathtaking” (Wood). The movie being breathtaking helps watchers want to watch more. “But in the end it is the 3D visual spectacle that dominates the Beowulf experience: we are engaged with the characters and the action, but we are enthralled by the vision.” (Wood). Movies are one of the easiest ways to engage any type of audience by not needing to imagine, but rather watching.

The open mind in watching a movie creates more questions that help with understanding Beowulf. “In fact, the story arc extends beyond the start of the poem and, we imagine, beyond its end.” (Wood). The more imagination that the learner has, the better understanding they have. “Unfortunately, the elegiac qualities of the poem are not effectively translated to the screen and the “performance capture technology” only highlights the filmmakers’ one-dimensional approach.” (Rees). The poem is translated with an open mind, it gives more questions to ask the watcher and gives better understanding.

Both the poem and the movie are phenomenal pieces of work. The movie gives more understanding while also keeping it more open minded. Visual learning keeps the viewers more interested in watching the film while also keeping them intrigued. Giving the best visual understanding rather than making it up by mind. The movie has helped get a better knowledge of Beowulf and the story it portrays.
