A wood-burning grill is lit on fire, and an egg is placed on top. After 10 minutes, someone eats the cooked egg and as it enters the person’s stomach, it begins its digestion process. Although this may seem like a simple meal to most people, many chemical reactions take place in the form of wood-burning, an egg cooking, and the egg being digested. The understanding of the chemical reactions that take place in the sequence of events is one application of the scientific field of chemistry. After the egg begins digestion, the small intestine absorbs most of the nutrients in the egg, and the waste products get moved into the large intestine where it is later expelled. This is another process that occurs subconsciously and is often overlooked in day-to-day life, but the interaction between the different parts of the human body is a major aspect of human biology. Chemistry and biology focus on different aspects of science and have distinct applications; however, there is considerable overlap between the two subjects as the fields often converge in the workforce.

Chemistry and biology emphasize different strands of science. Biology centers almost entirely around the study of living organisms while chemistry’s focal point is inorganic matter. Humans have sought to gain a better understanding of the world around them through rudimentary chemical reactions. For thousands of years, people turn clay into porcelain, grapes to wine, and wheat to bread. These first chemical interactions paved the way for what is now known as chemistry. Since the first experiments, the field of chemistry has only gotten more complex with the addition of formulas, tables, and rules, but the basic principle of chemistry remains the same: chemistry is the study of matter, its properties, as well as how and why substances combine or separate to form other substances. Chemistry seeks to explain and understand the unexplainable phenomena of the world. While humanity remains curious about the world, there is another set of mysteries within. Mankind has also yet to fully comprehend the human body but has always strived to gain knowledge about the inner works of the human anatomy. Through unsophisticated surgeries, as well as primitive autopsies and dissections, human beings took great interest in the study of both human and animal life. With more frequent biological discoveries, this research of living organisms advanced into what is known today as biology. Biology is essential to understand how living things function and the means by which they interact with the environment. Ultimately, biology and chemistry center around different facets of science. While chemistry focuses on the fundamental building blocks and processes of the universes, biology studies the biological operations of the living organism on Earth.

The implementation of chemical and biological research is at times, very different. Chemical research is often used to identify and utilize chemical reactions for humanity’s benefit. Energy, for example, is a byproduct of certain chemical reactions which can be used to generate power for towns or small cities. Furthermore, nearly all household products are comprised of chemical compounds. Table salt is a compound of sodium and chloride, bleach is a compound of sodium and hypochlorite, and dish soap is a compound of sodium, acetate, as well as a variety of other elements. Biological research, on the other hand, is routinely employed in the medical field to assist patients. As humanity reaches a greater understanding of human anatomy through research in the field of biology, hospitals and other medical institutions will be better equipped to treat ill patients. Certain subsectors of biology, namely cell biology, investigate the purpose and role of cells in the human body. By understanding how cells work in both healthy and diseased states, biologists researching plant, animal, and medical science will be able to develop new, more effective vaccines and medicines. In their most basic applications, biology and chemistry are rather unique. Chemistry is used mainly to assist humans in their daily lives and improve the quality of living by creating new chemical compounds; however, biology is utilized to improve the health and bodily functions of ill patients. 

Although chemistry and biology have distinct applications at the most basic level, as the application of biology and chemistry enters the workforce, the lines separating the two fields begin to blur. Biochemistry is the application of chemistry to study processes in biology at a molecular and cellular level. Unlike other occupations involving science such as physicist, biologist, or chemist, a biochemist involves both life science and chemical science in daily work. For instance, a biochemist interested in brain function studies cellular multiplication, communication within and between cells and organs, as well as regulation of chemical reactions in cells. Molecular biology is another career in which biology and chemistry are applied concurrently.
