In the everyday world of life, you see a lot of people that could be very similar and very different from each other. Sad to say, in the Novella “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck there is a man by the name of Lennie Small who has a mental disability and the only person that took care of him was his aunt Clara but unfortunately she died. Nevertheless, it was a good thing that Aunt Clara told her good friend George Milton if she was to ever pass away to take care of Lennie for her. In the Novella “Of Mice and Men,” Lennie and George show many similarities and differences throughout their journey to try to make the American Dream.

George and Lennie have shown throughout the Novella that they have numerous similarities in their journey. George and Lennie always travel everywhere together since Lennie has a disability so George needs to take care of him at all times. According to the Novella Lennie says to George, “I got you to look after me, and you got me to look after you” (Steinbeck 14).  This shows that they are similar. After all, they both always try to look after each other because their care for one another is more important to them than anything else throughout the book. In regards to George, he knows that he has to take care of him because his Aunt Clara asked to, so he loves him like a brother as well. In addition to this George and Lennie are their own little family they have going for them. As presented by John Steinbeck, George says, “Guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world. They got no family. They don’t belong no place,” (Steinbeck 13). This additionally shows that George and Lennie are similar because they both don’t have any family left around. The only family that they have around is each other. George and Lennie also don’t have a real place to live as a normal family would. This sums up that George and Lennie have shown that they have great similarities throughout the Novella.

George and Lennie have shown plenty of differences throughout the Novella “Of Mice and Men.” When two characters travel around almost their whole life together you are going to see the differences between them. This especially happens when two people go for an interview for a job at the same time. For instance, George states, “Oh! I ain’t saying he’s bright. He ain’t. But I say he’s a God damn good worker” (Steinbeck 22). This quote demonstrates that George and Lennie are different because George is a very smart guy in various situations throughout the Novella. On the other hand, Lennie makes very unintelligent choices throughout the Novella like when he would kill all the mice, and killing the boss’s son’s wife. Consequently, George states, “No, he ain’t, but he’s sure a hell of a good worker. Strong as a bull” (Steinbeck 22). Therefore this shows that George and Lennie are different because Lennie is physically big and strong. On the other hand, George is smaller and weaker than Lennie is. Overall, this concludes on why George Milton and Lennie Small are very different.

As shown very clearly George Milton and Lennie Small showed many connections and diversities with each other. In the Novella, it was shown that George and Lennie always look after each other because of their love and care for each other and that they don’t have any real family besides each other. It was also displayed that George is an intelligent man while on the other hand, Lennie is the complete opposite, also that their physical appearance is different from one another by a lot. Wherever you might go every day like school, shopping centers, work you name it, it’s almost guaranteed that you see people that are very alike and very different from one another. Nevertheless, people that you might see in real life or a book, novel, or even movie could be very similar and different from each other without you realizing it.
