‘Ill Manors’ by Plan B and ‘Where is the love?’ by The Black Eyed Peas both focus on the problems that they see in society. ‘Ill Manors’ spotlights the ongoing discrimination of children that live in council houses including the ignorance portrayed by the people. On the other hand, ‘Where is the love?’ highlights the hatred everyone gives each other and the dilemmas that are caused due to that.
Both protest songs mention the toxicity of people. First of all, The Black Eyed Peas forces us to really think about why society is so judgmental when they say, ‘Where is the love y’all, come on’. The use of repetition (they say it more than once) shows that The Black Eyed Peas felt as if they needed to emphasize the fact that people today have no interest in each other, they only care about themselves. Following this, the idea that some people have a belief that others only do things to serve their own needs supports the reason why exactly no one really bothers to help and care for one another. Whereas Plan B decided to address how people will choose to be easily deceived and instantly believe how society falsely perceives children living in council states, as mentioned before. This is reinforced when Plan B says ‘Keep on believing what you believe in the papers’ in his song Ill Manors. The tone in which he says it implies that Plan B is exhausted with all the speculations and due to that he’s only saying what the people want to hear.
Secondly, the ignorance of society is also repeatedly mentioned in both songs. The quote ‘what are you looking at you little rich boy?’ from ‘Ill Manors’ heavily influences the idea that the people who are ‘better off’ or are wealthy don’t associate themselves with others who don’t meet their (supposedly) high standards such as council state children, they’d rather stare at them from afar as they would most likely consider them unusual and dangerous. This also portrays how false information from society, about people who live in council houses, can fool anyone. Moving on, The Black Eyed Peas wants us to realise that most people in this world will care about themselves more than anyone else and that people wont show any remorse and support for others who need it. This is revealed when Plan B says ‘Or would you turn the other cheek?’. The way that it is presented as a rhetorical question intensifies the way people look at it as it makes us put ourselves into the shoes of the people living in council houses. Furthermore, ‘turn the other cheek’ clarifies how people would deliberately choose to ignore the situation and the call for help because it would either not benefit them or because they don’t see a reason as to why they must help.
Lastly, ‘Ill Manors’ and ‘Where is the love?’ Both include examples of discrimination. Plan b shows this by saying ‘Oi look there’s a chav, that means council housed and violent’, once again he is just saying what people want to hear. Moreover, saying that “if you are chav then you must be living in a council house” produces stereotypes, It creates an idea that all people who live in council houses are a bad influence and are sinister. Most people that live in council houses are not chavs, however society will keep on believing they are as they will not bother to get to know or talk to people who actually live in council houses they rather just make accusations based on what’s shown in the media. The Black Eyed Peas expressed how they felt about the racism displayed by people after the 9/11 when they said ‘But if you only had love for your own race then you only have space to discriminate’. This refers to how specific races and different kinds of people especially Muslims were discriminated and were blamed for the 9/11 even though they had nothing to do with it. Forward, they were also trying to say that if you only love your kind then you will think that you’re more superior than anyone else and produce hatred for all other various cultures, races and religions.
