The Council on American -Islamic Relations (CAIR) is an organization whose purpose is to bring awareness of anti-Muslim discrimination and islamophobia in the United States. The organization was founded in 1994, around that time a lot of American Muslims found themselves the targets of abhor. The organization was created so it could challenge stereotypes between Islam and Muslims. This research paper will examine the importance of American -Islamic relations, the limitations that the organization has faced, and the effects it has on Muslims after 9/11.

Council on American Islamic Relations is a national organization with headquarters in Washington, DC. There are over 30 local organizations in the United States. The CAIR organization works with councils and advocates on behalf of Muslims and others who have experienced religious discrimination. According to Abdullah Al- Arian, a professor at Georgetown University, “American Muslims have been subjected to a multi-billion-dollar securitization effort that has devastated the community” (“The war on terror and the disciplining of American Muslims”). The CAIR however at the moment remains silent, to stay away from accusations like terrorism.

The whole purpose of the organization is to maintain a sturdy image, and because of Muslim hate after 9/11 that has been very difficult on the organization, because they want to defend their people, but the organization needs to be very careful when it comes to public opinion. For example, the riddle: What cannot talk but will talk when spoken to, is a perfect example of this statement. American Muslims need to be careful of their actions, they are being watched over like a hawk in this country. Thereby limiting their ability to serve their communities in the civil rights work.

Despite all the struggles the CAIR has faced, they are still fighting for American Muslims. Acknowledging people who have faced unfortunate comments about their faith. According to CAIR California, 25,000 people have faced discrimination since the founding of the organization in 1994. The organization in California receives around 800 entries every year. Using methods such as meditation, conference, public pressure, or any necessary actions or debatable statistics to push a legal action forward.

Some American Muslims do defend themselves in undesirable conformation. According to CAIR phidliphia report on how September 11, 2001, change the Muslim community forever. The result proved that 69% of Muslims have experienced Islamophobia or discrimination since 9/11. The report also shows that 95% of American Muslims are more likely to speak up when they receive negative comments. 63% of Muslims have stated that their local mosques have practiced multi-faith religions since the attack. 67% of people feel uncomfortable asking for religious arrangements at work. The survey was conducted online with 1,053 responses from August 12 to September 3, 2021.

Overall the Organization has helped American Muslims to live in a better environment, fundamentally and mentally. The everyday struggles that American Muslims have to go through are indescribable since 9/11 However, there is still a lot that needs to be done, the organization needs to advocate more, and focus on the end result. People need to stand up for themselves, because every voice matters, despite their personal belief.
