Daisy In The Great Gatsby Essay Sample

The most important puzzle piece of your life is who you love; it can make you, it can break you. In the novel The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Gatsby does everything he could to find Daisy and fall in love with her as he once did before he went off to war. Gatsby shows his deep endearment in regards to Daisy on the account of how he lies to impress her and how he invites anyone and everyone to his home no matter who they are, in order to find Daisy, furthermore how Daisy is always in his thoughts and his aspirations.

Jay would do anything to be with daisy. He is willing to lie and spend millions of dollars on clothes and property so the woman he loves the most in the world would notice him. When Nick and Gatz were chatting, Jay disclosed "'I am the son of some wealthy people in the Middle West-all dead now. I was brought up in America but educated at Oxford, because all my ancestors had been educated there for many years. It is a family tradition'" (65). Jay was indirectly talking to Nick in hopes that he would relay this information to Daisy. Gatz lied to his peer, risking conflict, in order for Daisy to take observance of his wealth. This is one of the first times in the novel where Fitzgerald illuminates the strength of Gatsby’s love for Daisy. Not only does Gatsby show his love in conversations to his friend Nick; but also when he spends his money and decides his lifestyle. Due to his poor spending habits in order to impress Daisy; it is a bitter life for Jay. In the novel it is outspoken that “‘Gatsby bought that house so that Daisy would be just across the bay’” (78). Gatsby will do anything he has too in order to attain Daisy’s love. While becoming wealthy Gatz materialized his life by buying a colossal house just to hold parties for Daisy and to be near her. Furthermore, spending all the money he has earned just for a woman who has forgotten he exists. Gatz hides behind the mask that he is a rich man that loves to party which is simply untrue. Jay is a liar and he recklessly spends his money all on one woman that does not even love him. Virtually going broke to show her that he is ‘old money’, which he is not.

Daisy is the centerpiece of Gatsby’s mind, One glimpse at her and his whole mood changes. Gatsby loves her endlessly and gives every ounce of attention he has to her. Normally when you see somebody you love, you get butterflies. In contrast, Gatsby's whole demeanor is altered. For instance, when Gatsby saw Daisy after going ages without a glimpse, “there was a change in Gatsby that was simply confounding. He literally glowed; without a word or gesture of exultation, a new well-being radiated from him and filled the room" (89). Gatsby’s love stretches far beyond the social norms in society at the time. Many people loved each other but never had the deeper connection that Gatsby has for Daisy.  Additionally, Gatz dedicates his life to finding and loving Daisy unconditionally. No matter where he is, whether it is a party, social gathering, or drinks at the bar, Daisy always has a place in Gatsby’s mind. Sightings and flashes of her presence fulfill his happiness as "'He's read a Chicago paper for years just on the chance of catching a glimpse of Daisy's name"' (79). Having Daisy in Gatsby’s mind gives him the motivation to be great. Gatsby became uber wealthy to gain her love and marriage. It is obvious to see that everything he does has some correlation to making Daisy happy or making her fall in love with him. The novel further conveys how his focus and attention are typically only for her or to someone that can bring him closer to her. Daisy is what keeps his life running and without him he wouldn't be as strong as he is.

While some people think that Gatsby is only in love with the idea of Daisy, this claim is simply untrue. Gatsby from the beginning has loved Daisy. The actions he partakes in such as buying expensive items and creating a false past show how he really wants to impress Daisy and show why he is better than Tom Buchanan. If he was only in love with the idea of her. Gatsby would not have been as obsessed with her in the first place and would have moved on with his life after the war had concluded.

Jay would certainly lie to friends and family on the grounds that his love stretches far beyond what people normally see in a woman. Gatsby throughout the book shows his resilience when finding Daisy. Today many people do not find love that governs their life in such a powerful nature. To consummate, Gatsby has true love for Daisy and would do anything for her.
