Charles Dickens, the author of A Tale of Two Cities, has brought to us many crucial and intricate details of all the characters in the book. From main characters such as Charles Darnay to characters like the road mender, Dickens strives to portray a vivid personality of each character. Charles Darnay and Sydney Carton both go through changes throughout the book which leads into the storyline changing because of their transformations.

Sydney Carton, a brilliant yet unhappy character, has developed greatly throughout the story. Carton, also known as the jackal, is the sidekick to C.J. Stryver, who is a lawyer, goes from being a depressed drunkard to a confident and loving character, Carton transforms greatly throughout the story. As the story progresses, he starts to take ownership of his actions and starts to dress nicer and become kinder to those around him. He even kept his promise to Lucie that he would sacrifice himself for anyone she loved. By taking Darnay’s place in the execution, he showed that anyone can change and that he could keep a promise.

Accordingly, there is Charles Darnay. A kind and loyal gentleman who happens to be Lucie Manette's spouse, Darnay along with Carton, developed greatly as the story advanced. Being born into royalty, Darnay was very blessed with a rich charisma, although he kept his mother’s dying wish that he would denounce his royalty when he came of age. Before moving to England for several years with his family, he denounced his royalty as his mother asked. Despite his change not being as dramatic as Carton’s, he does become kinder towards Carton as Lucie had told him to.

Furthermore, as their transformations begin to unfold, the story has to adapt to their changes which molds a new path for the future. By looking more sophisticated and confident, Sydney Carton showed the greatest change. Because of this, he has gained more respect from Darnay and the Manette family. As the execution nears, Carton is easily able to take the place of Darnay because of this change. Consequently, Darnay’s transformation shows that he is more tinder towards Carton who in the beginning was a drunkard who was too involved in his work.

Moreover, when it comes to stories like A Tale of Two Cities, Charles Dickens is very involved in making the best stories that he can, which makes the story become very clear when we talk about transformations. The transformations happen between Carton and Darnay which affects the storyline and characters. Nevertheless, we can see that these details were needed because of the fact that without them, the story would not have been as intriguing as it was. From the little changes like attitude between the characters to being able to disguise as another person as Carton had done, these changes were needed to keep the synergy between the book and the reader.
