“Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgment.” J.R.R Tolkien. The death penalty is a punishment given to those of whom have committed cimes of great severity, for example atempted/successful murder of a witness or large scale drug trafficking. The person who has been sentenced  to death penalty will be killed using a leathal dose of a very strong drug is most countries. In some places they still use more cruel means of death such as. Hanging people or death by firing squad. I am strongly against this penalty and completely think that it should be abolished from the countries that still use it as a punishment for the following reasons: there is the possibility of killing a wrongly accused person; it takes someone’s chance to redeem themselves; it is very costly and lastly it can sometimes make the crime seem less severe than it truly is.

Starting off with one of the severe reasons on why we should stop using this punishment in our society: the possibility of killing the wrong person. This is a real risk and has happened on multiple occasions including one of which of a man from Alabama. The man was charged with murder of the death of his neighbour and later on investigators found the murder weapon with DNA from another person who was found guilty after the man had been killed. This example is an extreme possibility but still something that could happen. The possibility of somebody who is completely being accidentally being charged with the death penalty is unimaginable, it feels nauseating that it something that could happen in modern day society.

The next point I will be covering is that the death penalty takes away a chance at redemption. Many of those who are charged with death penalty struggle with severe metal illnesses or addictions. So at the time they commit their crimes they may not have been thinking straight. You do not blame a toddler for a mistake they make because they do not have a fully developed mind; the same should go for a person who is not in the prime state of mind. The government could just as easily take money they would have spent on killing the person and use it for rehabilitation. A study recently done by the Washington Post shows that the majority of convicted criminals feel remorse for what they have done and want a chance to try and apologize for what they have done.

The death penalty is also a very costly way of punishment. On average each case that will end in the death penalty will cost on average 1.26 million USD.This cost is added up from to court aporinted lawyers that had been provided, the appeals and the cost of the leathal drug. It is a huge expense of taxpayers and not something that we should be adding on the massive debt that multiple countries are facing at the moment because of the pandemic is a large expense. It is also a known fact that the entire concept is just cosmetic and for show so there is no reason to use it.

The death penalty deters the crime. For many people especially those of whom have been incarcerated would much rather face the death penalty then have having a life sentence without parole. Many of the criminals commit the crime knowing that if they were caught they would only have to face the death penalty and they would rather have that then anything else.

From the information above the death penalty should be abolished in the countries that still used in. There is a possibility of giving the wrong person the death sentence, takes away from a chance at redemption, it is very expensive and lastly in some cases its takes away from the severity of the crime. As people continue to commit crimes this will only get worse; the world has changed so much shouldn’t this rule change too?
