Worldwide problems feed into bigotry against one’s gender at work, interfering with someone’s life. This makes women’s expectations at work only increase. Bringing over the many years fighting for change, women find themselves being out of reach to equality. In that case, they will find it hard obtaining assistance. Still many people argue against the justice of feminism, claiming that what is currently set is enough. The controversy behind women in the medical workforce have led to a deeper problem involving sexism, harassment, harmful stereotypes, and deleterious bias. 

Women receive much discrimination as a result of sexism. One reason being an obviously large wage gap between men and women. A study conducted in 2018 has shown that women working full-time jobs only earn 84.3 percent of what men earn. A huge gap has been noticed, “Bureau of Labor Statistics revealed that the collective wage gap for women physicians is in the billions, with women physicians and surgeons paid an estimated $19 billion less annually than male physicians and surgeons”(Asgari, Carr, Bates pg E1). Another being no improvement to fix such problems that people are aware of. There has been a consistent wage gap that has not had an effort of change for two decades. The lack of change has been noticed over the years, “Because 73 years after its enactment, gender pay inequity remains a major concern in society in general and in medicine”(Asgari, Carr, Bates, pg E1). Some may argue that there is equality between men and women and that is no longer an issue. Many changes have been made over the past many years to obtain equality. Even with large amounts of improvement, that still does not make it equal if one is still not receiving the same treatment as another. This improvement is still in progress, which has taken years to be spread. There is proof that there is no difference between how men and women are treated at work. Furthermore, businesses still have proof of having a higher chance of favoring men. Sexism is still an ongoing viewpoint that is shared and passed down by many people without any thought that this can lead to negative outcomes. Many women are treated with contempt not just by higher-ups, but also by their colleagues. 

Many women go through sexual harrassment by fellow medical workers during work that goes unnoticed, leaving women with an unhealthy mental state. Because of the worth of their job, people in higher professions may not be held accountable for their conduct. Stephanie, a female radiation oncologist, was drugged and sexually assulted while in the abuser’s home for a tutorial. He was found guilty and due to serve many years in jail. instead of his professional reputation, he only served 9 months. Another victim’s abuser has been fined but still works in the same workplace where he sexually abused his victim. Victims of harassment deal with emotions that many have to deal with alone. According to a survey, less than half of higher ups provide emotional support, making victims feeling more isolated with their feelings. Many feel enclosed with their emotions, ”They’re living by themselves ... they don’t have anyone to talk to after hours, they can be very isolated and vulnerable” (Alice, pg 4). An individual may find that one should reach out for help, making the situation more heard and aware of to others. Reaching out for assistance after having been through a traumatic experience is a great way to recover and make more known to others. A victim can be put under blackmail or they don't wish to cause trouble. It may also put them under a fear of not being trusted when asking for help. There is a chance of lowering rates of assault if it is spoken about more, inspiring others to speak up. It may be passed off as untrue or a lie if there is no proof, which would most likely turn out to be useless. Even when being open about the subject, several people do not receive therapeutic help, which will create mental health problems. People can exhibit disrespect in a variety of ways, including arrogant behaviors against someone’s personal boundaries and negatively identifying them.

Putting people in negative categories affects their accomplishments at and during work, causing an unbarring stress on them. Doctors have trouble trying to succeed at work and reduce sexist roles. Such as female medical workers that have attempted impressing male colleagues, but have struggled to do so while juggling other life responsibilities. These pessimistic stereotypes, such as women not being able to work late hours, have affected what some people have chosen for their career choices. Such conditions give rise to someone’s belief that a group is inferior to another. Women have less confidence when believing words of others, “If women feel fear of stereotyping when they demonstrate male-oriented leadership behaviors, they tend to aspire less to the power and roles associated with leadership” (Han et al. 1092). Some people feel that women who acquire jobs have earned them, while women who don't get jobs have not worked hard enough. Some may state that stereotyping is not harmful or based on factual statements. Stereotypes may vary, including in a non-harmful manner. However, it usually results in thinking less of another person with just an appearance. Jobs and academic opportunities can be put to an end with unfair reasoning. Stereotypes more than likely derive from some kind of ongoing fact. A similar group of people may do something unfavorable, regardless that is not an excuse to hold every person of that group accountable. These facts can also apply to more than one group, not just a specific type. Labels have an impact on people’s perceptions and sentiments towards others.

An abundant amount of bias forms around people, making the problem of gender equality worsen in the medical field. Bias is usually hard for someone to admit to having, because they might associate it with complete discriminaion. Opinions are normal among people, “However, research on the human brain and how it makes sense of the world suggests not only that all of us are biased, but that we must be biased to survive” (Kang, Kaplan, pg 579). Some believe that bias is only among racist, sexist, and bigoted people. Approaching ways to fix bias can make the problem worse. People believe fixing women would solve the problem, “Related to the gender bias in organizations, most programmes attempting to address gender inequality focus on so-called fixing the women, by teaching them such skills as how to lean in, negotiate better, stand up straight, adopt powerful postures, talk more in meetings, and be more assertive, to name a few” (Kang, Kaplan pg 581). According to studies, females are treated more severely than males for shortcomings, and these negative consequences persist. Furthermore, an individual can feel that bias is helpful or unable to be fixed because one cannot fix an organization's choices in who they hire. Bias can be a helpful way of assisting humans to make a choice. It is up to the individual to use both opinion and logic to justify their decision. Choosing something without actual consideration would not be seen as helpful. A company has every right to hire the people they deem fit to perform their duties. Choosing a future worker should be based on the hard work they have shown previously, and not on appearance alone. It is possible to hold businesses accountable for discrimination when enough people are aware of it. Judgment is harmful to people in the workplace. In all, sexism is still occurring throughout medical businesses around the world.

Women in the medical industry have areas of contention, which has produced a broader issue encompassing unequal treatment of males and females, mistreatment, negative labels, and harmful bias. Discrimination only makes outcomes for people with potential feel less about themselves. Lack of respect alters how they are seen by their peers outside of their profession. Which will influence one’s mental wellbeing since they assume they are not skilled enough. This will make certain groups not as successful  in life. People, particularly in hospitals, could have benefited from these accomplishments. All in all, this behavior leaves women uninspired to do their best for themselves and what they can do for others.
