The smartphone has created many advantages in society, such as quick access to information, entertainment and communication. However, distracted driving is not one of them.Transport Canada estimated that distracted driving had contributed to 23% of fatal collisions in Canada (Transport Canada, 2022).

Distracted driving is a global problem because of far more consequences than just injuries and fatalities. In Canada, each province and territory has defined distracted driving with different fines and penalties to decrease the increasing number of distracted drivers. Despite the attempts to limit the number of distracted drivers, statistics in Canada show that simply increasing fines, creating education campaigns and collecting data is not effective enough to solve the problem of distracted driving.

With the currently used solutions to stop the problem, there are still too many tragedies that affect victims to lose their loved ones. In addition to the tragedies, distracted driving is a waste of time that enforcement can use elsewhere. There are solutions to improve and enforce the law to deter distracted drivers by searching for legislative strategies to prevent distracted driving outside of Canada.

Based on studies and research to prevent distracted driving, Canada must act now to stop the tragedies from occurring. The smartphone has created many advantages in society, such as quick access to information, entertainment and communication. However, distracted driving is not one of them.
