Self-love is an extremely vital part of life. Everyone needs at least a bit of it in order to be successful and happy in life. The commercial being analyzed in this essay, “Dove Real Beauty Sketches / You’re More Beautiful Than You Think,” is by the soap company Dove. The commercial follows along perfectly with Dove’s slogan, “Beauty is for everyone.” In life, everyone needs love, which correlates with the universal problem in the commercial: self-esteem. With that being said, every human being flourishes off of different kinds of affection.

All humans require a sense of love. Whether it be from family members, friends, or one’s self, everyone needs and deserves love. Love from others can help us individually love ourselves. The blonde woman was told to talk to a woman named Chloe, after this, they were asked to describe each other. When Chloe described the other woman, she said “She was thin and you could see her cheekbones. And her chin was a nice thin chin.” The artist drew this image, then at the end the images were shown to the . The artist asked the blonde woman, “Do you think you’re more beautiful than you say?” To this, the woman responds “Yeah, yeah.” This shows that other people’s love for one person, even if it’s minor, can change one’s whole perception of themself.  This love from other people can help us transform our own love for one’s own self. Additionally, all humans require a good perception of themselves. This is displayed in the commercial in the way that the women’s attitudes shifted from being self-deprecating to grateful and coming to realization with themselves. For instance, the blonde woman, towards the end, stated “I should be more grateful of my natural beauty. It impacts the choices that we make, the jobs we apply for, how we treat our children… It impacts everything. It couldn’t be more critical to your happiness.” If each individual human continues to view themselves as less than they are, those individuals may end up making decisions that have negative consequences or effects.

This commercial identifies the modern global issue of women's confidence. As the women were describing themselves in derogatory ways, it was obvious that no one truly sees themselves as how they actually are. This is because of the societal standards set by the modern day media, such as social media platforms like Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook. These women all hold themselves to a certain standard, this is obvious because of the comments they make about themselves: “We sort of realized: Oh, man, now I have to talk about myself and, and, and think about my looks.” Everyone that has social media sees so many beauty standards, such as types of hair, makeup, skin, and body shapes. This usually forces one to compare themselves to what they see, which is what the commercial identifies. The commercial also identifies the global problem of women’s mental health in general. The last line of the commercial is “We spend a lot of time as women, analyzing and trying to fix the things that aren’t quite right, and we should be spending more time appreciating the things that we do like. This is an excellent summary of the video in whole, because this is the entire message of it. This applies especially to mothers since they focus so much on their children and not enough of themselves.

Every human being flourishes off of different sorts of affection. The type of affection displayed in the commercial was affection from the other women towards a certain woman. The women started off very negatively, however once they realized that they are perceived differently by the other women, they began to lighten up. Receiving compliments and other sorts of affection can help individuals flourish in their mental health and help their perception of themselves. An example of this in very early development is when a child is upset and the mother cradles them to calm them down, or whenever one hugs their significant other. At the end when the paintings were revealed, the women took this as a compliment to themselves. Most of the women mentioned that they need to work on themselves. This proves that compliments and different types of affection can help humans flourish.

The commercial’s focus on internal beauty helps prove the point that all humans flourish off of different types of affection, it points out the global issue of women’s confidence, and it proves the point that all humans require a sense of love. This proves in the producers’ way of dialogue and the emotional filming style.
