Over the past three years Dua Lipa has made a huge name for herself in the pop industry, but she had some struggles on the way. While on tour people mocked her dance skills and made her feel like she was unworthy of what she had. Though this never stopped Lipa from continuing her career in music. Dua Lipa overcame the hate she got and grew from it, instead of letting it get to her.

Dua Lipa’s Early Years

Dua Lipa grew up in a family that loved music, so it’s no surprise she went into music later in her life. Lipa’s father was in a rock band so he played a lot of rock music for her but she was more interested in pop. (Sheffeild, Par. 1.) Lipa loved to sing but some people doubted that she would ever have a career out of it. When Lipa was eleven her choir teacher told her that she couldn’t sing because her voice was “too low.” (Cool Accidents, Par. 7.) This didn’t stop her from following her dreams though.

Both of Dua Lipa's parents were refugees from the war going on in Kosovo. When Lipa was eleven her family moved back to Kosovo from London because they felt like it was safe enough for them to return. This move didn’t scare Lipa, to her this was an exciting new adventure. (Nash, Par. 12.) Lipa really loved Kosovo and felt a great sense of community there. She lived in Kosovo for a few years but felt like she wouldn’t be able to get her music on a global scale, which was her dream. This caused her to leave on her own at the age of fifteen to go back to London and attend Sylvia Young Theatre School. (Nash, Par. 26.) After going to Sylvia Young Theatre School, Lipa spent the next year working to get a manager and a record deal. She posted many covers online and eventually was discovered by Ben Mawson, who became her manager. Two years later she was signed to Warner Bros. Records and her career truly started. (Nash, Par. 29.)

Dua Lipa's First Album

In June, 2017, Dua Lipa dropped her self-titled first album. Leading up to the album being released Lipa had a few singles released. One of which being ¨New Rules,¨ a song about trying to get over an ex. The song was a massive hit and reached number ten on the Billboard Top 100 in America. The video for the song has over one billion views. Many people saw the potential in Dua Lipa to become a huge popstar. ““New Rules” is indeed a catchy song from the summer, but it transcends seasons and remains relevant with its powerful and simplistic messages.” (Lane, Par. 6.)

When Lipa finally released her self-titled debut album, it got mixed reviews. Many people agreed that there were amazing tracks on the album, such as, “New Rules,” “Blow Your Mind (Mwah),” and “Be The One.” Most listeners felt like there were a few lacklustre tracks that felt like they were lacking personality and were dated. Many moments felt like Lipa wasn’t able to truly be herself. (Kheraj, Par. 2.) Even though there were flaws with the album, critics still thought that Lipa had a lot of potential to change things up in the pop industry. Her voice was amazing, she just needed to start making more of the music that she wanted to make, not just what she thinks will do good.

Criticism and Hate

Dua Lipa went on tour for her new album, but while on tour things started to get worse for her. A few videos displaying Lipa’s lack of stage presence and below average dance skills became popular. Several people used this as a chance to make fun of her and completely dismiss her whole career. The comments sections of these videos were filled with many negative replies, including, “I love her lack of energy, go girl give us nothing!” and “we're going to witness Dua Lipa dancing like this at MAMA 2019. why is she even on the list?” (Stopera, Par. 7.)

The hate that Lipa received from her dancing negatively affected her mental health. Lipa said that the comments gave her anxiety to perform  and made her feel self-conscious. In an interview she said, “I experienced a shit ton at the end of my first record, and it was definitely something that gave me anxiety and made me upset and made me feel like I wasn’t good enough and made me feel like, maybe I’m not meant to be here on the stage.” (Gray, Par. 3.) Whenever someone would film her performing, instead of thinking they’re a fan, she felt like they were doing it to laugh at her. Even though this was a tough time for Lipa, she grew from the hate instead of letting it get the best of her. She has stated that she is grateful for what had happened to her because of how much tougher it made her. (Gray, Par. 7.) After receiving this hate and criticism Lipa listened to the criticism and started working on her dancing. Though we wouldn’t be able to see this improvement until her return to music.

Dua Lipa's Return to Music

At the beginning of October, 2019, Dua Lipa revealed her new blonde hair on Instagram as a teaser to her new era that was about to come. The caption to the post was, ¨A new era! Thank you for your patience. See you soon.¨ (Andrew Trendell, Par. 1.) Lipa also teased that the album would be very different from her last album and would be more mature and nostalgic. She stated that she was experimenting with new sounds and taking risks on her new album. Many people were intrigued with where she might go with her next era. (Andrew Trendell, Par. 6.)

In October of 2019 Dua Lipa’s single, Don't Start Now, came out. The song showed Dua Lipa heading in a more retro direction for her next album. The song was a huge success and received a lot of praise from critics. Many people loved the new direction Lipa was heading in. Even critics who hadn't liked her past work agreed that the song was a step in the right direction. ¨If Don’t Start Now is a taste of what is to come on her second album, it is safe to say that, indeed, Dua Lipa is most certainly not the woman we remember.¨ (Nambiar, Par. 2.) ¨Don't Start Now¨ peaked at number two on the Billboard Top 100. Her performances for the song also showed a huge improvement in her performance and dancing skills too.

Leading to the release of her new album, Dua Lipa revealed the title of the album would be ¨Future Nostalgia.¨ Lipa released two more singles, ¨Physical¨ and ¨Break My Heart,¨ before ¨Future Nostalgia¨ was released. Both singles were given the same praise as ¨Don't Start Now¨ for being great pop songs with nostalgic feelings. On March 27, 2020, ¨Future Nostalgia¨ was released. The album was very successful and gathered widespread approval from critics. The album was seen as a fantastic pop record that proved that Lipa was not to be underestimated. ¨The 11-track album is a succinct, refreshing and bombastic homage to unapologetic dance-pop that should be an easy contender for Album of the Year.¨ (Karam, Par. 2.)

Present Day Dua Lipa

Since Lipa has dropped ¨Future Nostalgia¨, she has only grown more as an artist and has become even more successful. Lipa has released three singles, multiple remixes, and a deluxe version of “Future Nostalgia.” But on November 27, 2020, Dua Lipa had one of her biggest projects yet. Lipa had a performance called “Studio 2054.” The show was a live online concert that you would be able to pay to see. Lipa had many huge guests appear in the concert too. The guests were FKA Twigs, The Blessed Madonna, Miley Cyrus, Bad Bunny, J Balvin, Tainy, Angèle, Kylie Minogue and Elton John. Unsurprisingly the concert was a huge success. Over 5-million people were watching the stream and it got massive praise for having great performances, dance numbers, and being very entertaining. Dua Lipa had finally been able to achieve what she had always wanted to do. (Aswald, Par. 1.)

Where Dua Lipa’s hard work really paid off was at the Grammys. Lipa was nominated in six different categories, most being big award categories, some of which being best album and best song. On March 14, 2021, the 63rd Grammys had happened. At the show Lipa showed how far she had come since she had gotten hate for her dancing with her performance of “Don’t Start Now” and “Levitating.” The performance had a gigantic positive reception from viewers and critics. “Mostly, Twitter was stunned and impressed by the elaborate choreography, especially because the model-turned-singer has developed a reputation in the past for her awkward dance moves.” (Carras, Par. 3.) Later in the night Lipa won the Grammy for best Vocal Pop Album. This night had shown how much she had grown since her first album and proved that she did the right thing by improving from the hate and criticism instead of letting it stop her. Dua Lipa had finally shown that she was a huge pop star. (Freeman, Par. 16.)

Conclusion

At a moment in her life where she could have given up, Dua Lipa overcame the hate she received and grew from it. Dua Lipa is now bigger than ever and it’s all because she listened to criticism and improved as an artist instead of trying to stay the same. Lipa has shown too never stop fighting for your passions.
