Dystopian Argumentative Essay Example

Do you know what a dystopian society is? A dystopian society is a perfect world gone wrong. Most things that are dystopian weren’t meant to be dystopian. Most things are created to help society, but some turn out to hurt society instead. People are responsible for the society we are living in today. Without a doubt, technology, lack of individualism, and government control are all examples of how our world is a dystopian society.

The main reason our society is dystopian is because of technology. Alexas is a good example of technology, “Not only is Alexa listening when you speak to an Echo smart speaker, an Amazon employee is potentially listening, too”(Valinsky). So, this is showing us that technology is spying and listening to our conversations. It's not just Alexa, it is any electronic device with a microphone. If you had your phone off and let's say you were talking about getting a pool. Then you decide to open up your phone and go to Instagram. The first ad will be about a pool; same with Google. An example of Alexas spying on people, “Amazon previously has been embroiled in controversy for privacy concerns regarding Alexa. Last year, an Echo user said the smart speaker had recorded a conversation without them knowing and sent the audio file to an Amazon employee in Seattle”(Valinsky). This confirms those computers are spying on us. It shows how Alexa heard a conversation and sent an audio message to an employee in Seattle. It has also been shown that hackers can hack into alexas and hear everything that is being said around it.

Another reason our society is dystopian is because of the lack of individualism. Most people are trying to act the same as the people surrounding them, “Numerous studies have found that we often decide how to act based on how those around us are acting” (Walden). People are trying to fit in with different groups, so they act differently around them. Most people do this without realizing it. A majority of people will act funny around a certain group, then act strict around a different group. It all depends on the group of people you are around. Belonging to a group can be satisfying, but it can disable our ability to create good ideas(Reiss). Being around people that provoke your ideas is a good thing. But, being around people who mask your ideas isn’t really good. So, you should be around people who provoke and compliment your ideas.

The last reason why our society is dystopian is because of government control. The government controls a lot of things, “Government restrictions take a variety of forms, including bans on trades, controls on prices, and the imposition of taxes and subsidies to change incentives” (admin). This shows that the government controls some of the major goods. They can tax whatever they want, at different prices. Why should the government control these things? They get it easy because they don’t follow the rules half of the time. So, we the public should decide what the prices are and how much everything is taxed. For example, “In 1984, the government controlled the people through manipulation and fear. For example, the Thought Police monitor and threaten, and children report their parents’ crimes to the authorities” (admin). So, the government has enforced their control on us before? This shows that the government isn’t afraid to use their power against us. For example, they use our taxes for whatever they want. Sometimes it's for the better, but most of the time that money is just going into their pockets.

So does our society have traces of a dystopia? The answer is yes. There are many reasons that our society is a dystopia. Technology, lack of individualism, and government control are the few main reasons why our society is a dystopia.
